New Directors Named to Ohio State Foundation Board
Ray J. Groves, chair of The Ohio State University Foundation Board of Directors, has announced the recent appointment of two new directors: * Charles Klatskin, Englewood, N.J.; chairman and president, The Charles Klatskin Company, Inc. * John Sandefur, Sarasota, Fla.; retired president, Sandefur Builders "Charles Klatskin and John Sandefur have already established themselves as leaders in our efforts to strengthen Ohio State," said Jerry A. May, vice president for university development and president of The Ohio State University Foundation. "Their dedication, experience, and talent will prove invaluable in our efforts to meet the fund-raising goals that go hand-in-hand with the university's new Academic Plan." * * * * * * * * * * Charles Klatskin Charles (CK) Klatskin is chairman and president of the Charles Klatskin Company, Inc., the commercial real estate brokerage, development, and management firm he founded in Teterboro, N.J., in 1966. A graduate of Temple University and the Wharton School of Business Administration at the University of Pennsylvania, he is also secretary/treasurer of Herrod Construction Company, a general contractor for industrial buildings, and a partner in Forsgate Industrial Complex, a real estate development firm. Very active in his community, CK is a director of Russ Berrie & Company, Englewood (N.J.) Hospital, and the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center in Rockleigh, N.J. He is also a trustee of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the Myoclonus Foundation; is past president and past chairman of the Jewish Community Center in Tenafly, NJ; has served as national director, national district vice president, regional vice president, and president of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, New Jersey Chapter; is president and trustee of the Lynne & Charles Klatskin Foundation, Inc.; is a member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors; and has guest-lectured on industrial and commercial real estate at various universities, including Ohio State. In recognition of his accomplishments, he received the Real Estate Institute Leadership Excellence Award from Monmouth University in 1999. At Ohio State, CK serves on Dean's Advisory Council for the Max M. Fisher College of Business and on the National Major Gift Committee for New York. Though not Ohio State graduates, he and his wife, Lynne (who is vice president and secretary of the Charles Klatskin Company) are recognized by The Presidents Club and have hosted a number of events for Ohio State administrators, alumni, donors, and students. In addition, they created the recently dedicated Neil Klatskin Undergraduate Student Lounge in the Fisher College of Business's Schoenbaum Hall and established the Neil M. Klatskin Memorial Scholarship in Real Estate-both in memory of their son, a 1982 Ohio State business graduate who died in 1989 of pancreatic cancer. They reside in Englewood, N.J. John Sandefur A 1954 graduate of Ohio State in electrical engineering, John Sandefur is the retired president of Sandefur Builders in Columbus, one of the nation's largest developers of federally subsidized rehabilitation housing for low- and middle-income families. After serving in the United States Air Force, he was appointed by Ohio Governor Rhodes to the State Plumbing Advisory Board in 1964 and served on the Governor's Emergency Resources Planning Committee of the Housing Construction Task Force, in addition to numerous other local, state, and national housing and home-building associations. In 1967, he received the Earl Washburn Memorial Award for outstanding and unusual contributions to the building industry from the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbus. Active in the Sarasota community, John and his wife, Tana (B.S., social work, 1957) are supporters of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, where John chairs the Advisory Board; the New College Foundation; the Gulfcoast Wonder and Imagination Zone of the Blivas Science and Technology Center; the Sarasota Ballet; and the West Coast Symphony. They have worked on behalf of Children's Hospital in Columbus, as well as other various other hospitals and charitable, child welfare, and civic organizations in Sarasota and Ohio. They are also trustees of the Sandefur Charitable Foundation. At Ohio State, John was a member of Chi Phi and Eta Sigma Mi Beta engineering honoraries as a student. He now serves on the National Major Gift Committee for Florida's West Coast and is a member of the Buckeye Club. He and Tana are recognized by The Presidents Club and are members of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Inc. Together, they funded the construction of the Sandefur Pavilion at the Olentangy Wetland Research Park and have committed additional support for the new Wetland Research and Education Building. They have also supported and worked on behalf of the Colleges of Engineering and Social Work, Longaberger Alumni House, and the Department of Athletics, and have funded scholarships and fellowships through the Critical Difference for Women Program. They have regularly opened their home for meetings, events, and other gatherings of Ohio State friends, alumni, and administrators-on behalf of The Presidents Club, the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, Athletics, and other university programs. They reside in Columbus and Sarasota. * * * * * * * * * * The Ohio State University Foundation was designated by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees as the primary fund-raising and gift receipt organization of the university. Membership on the board is divided into three categories: elected directors, volunteers who are among the university's chief supporters and advocates; ex officio directors, who serve as a consequence of their positions elsewhere in the university; and non-voting members, who hold executive positions within the university.
