PRESIDENT KIRWAN ISSUES STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR TAFT’S
EXECUTIVE BUDGET
JANUARY 29, 2001
“Governor Taft should be applauded for recognizing the need to build Ohio's high-technology economy even in a tight budget year. His proposals to begin funding The Ohio Plan and to fully fund Project One are worthy of everyone's support. These initiatives will provide the basic knowledge, infrastructure and work force to help make Ohio a leader in the key fields of biotechnology, nanotechnology and information technology.
“In addition, I strongly commend the governor for supporting our request, and that of the Ohio Board of Regents, to provide Ohio State with temporary relief from the state's cap on tuition. If approved by the General Assembly, this will significantly enhance the quality of our undergraduate education program.
“At the same time, we are disappointed that there were not enough funds to support adequately other important aspects of our budget, such as the state's share of instruction. In the coming months, we will work with the General Assembly in support of the governor's recommendations and other vital needs. Ohio's colleges and universities are more important than ever in today's knowledge economy, and it is essential that we have the tools to do our job.”
