COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees, in its meeting Friday (2/2), accepted more than $900,000 in gifts to the university received during December 2000. The gifts from alumni, industry and individuals in support of research, teaching and service will be used to establish 16 new named endowed funds. The board also accepted 323 research grants and contracts, awarded during November and December 2000 and totaling nearly $32 million. In other business, the board approved a variety of personnel, academic and physical facilities matters.
Named endowed funds- The Retrieving the American Past Fund, $140,000, to support teaching and scholarship in the Department of History; provided by gifts from the earnings of the department’s electronic database text
- The Ralph E. “Dutch” Schramm Scholarship Fund in Animal Sciences, $100,328, provided by gifts from Schramm (B.S. Agr. – Major in Animal Husbandry, 1939)
- The Dorothy Bliss Student Enrichment Fund, $100,000, in support of student affairs in the College of Veterinary Medicine, provided by gifts from the estate of Dorothy Bliss
- The Howard R. Steele Memorial Fund in Chemical Engineering, $100,000, to attract deserving chemical engineering students who have successfully combined extracurricular community service activities with challenging academic study; provided by a gift from Eleanor Steele in memory of her husband, Howard R. Steele (B.S. Chemical Engineering, 1949)
- The Dorothy Bliss Endowed Scholarship Fund, $90,000, to support an outstanding senior in the College of Veterinary Medicine with an emphasis on small animal medicine; provided by gifts from the estate of Dorothy Bliss
- The Community Cultural Arts Endowment Fund, $75,695, to support diverse, high quality cultural enrichment programs for all residents of the Ohio State-Marion area; provided by gifts from anonymous donors of Marion, Ohio
- The Marvene E. Riggs Endowment Fund to Support Cancer Research, $73, 325, provided by gifts from the estate of Marvene E. Riggs
- The Wade Orthodontic Education Center Fund, $41,610, to support, maintain, publicize and/or expand the center; provided by gifts in memory of Drs. Robert E. Wade (D.D.S. 1929) and Dale B. Wade (D.D.S. 1965, M.S. Dentistry, 1969)
- The Elwood and Nellie Ellis II MBA Fellowship Fund, $32,409, to provide a fellowship to an M.B.A. student in the Fisher College of Business; provided by gifts from Elwood A. “Buzz” Ellis III (M.B.A. 1972) of WESTERVILLE in honor of his parents
- Non-Traditional Student Fund in the College of Human Ecology, $30,280, to support returning students seeking to complete an undergraduate degree in the College of Human Ecology; provided by gifts from Dorothy Seath Teater (M.S. Family Resource Management, 1954) and the estate of Florence Neuman (B. S. Home Economics, 1926; M.S. Agr. Home Economics, 1938; PhD. Psychology, 1943)
- The Daniel G. Amstutz International Trade Scholarship Fund, $25,000, to support students enrolled in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics who are studying or researching international trade; provided by a gift from Daniel G. Amstutz (B.S. Bus. Adm., 1954) of ARLINGTON, VA.
- The Mary Jo and A. Robert Kent Endowment Fund for Cancer Research, $25,000, to support human cancer genetics research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center – The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute; provided by a gift honoring the late Mary Jo Kent from the estate of her husband, A. Robert Kent of COLUMBUS.
- The Jared Robert Nodelman Humanities Scholar Endowed Scholarship Fund, $25,000, provided by a gift from the Jared Robert Nodelman Foundation
- The Tuckerman Family Endowment Fund for Children’s Programs, $25,000, to support Children’s Programs at the Wexner Center for the Arts, provided with a gift from Judy (B.S. Ed., 1964) and Steve (B.S. Optometry, 1966) Tuckerman of COLUMBUS
- The Christos I. Yessios Endowment Fund, $22,185, to support the learning and research of computer-aided architectural design through scholarships and/or assistantships; provided by gifts from graduates of the Computer Aided Architecture Design (CAAD) Program and Christos and Alexandra Yessios.
The board also approved amendments to the description of three named endowed funds: The Paul H. Rofkar Scholarship Endowment Fund, the Arthur E. Shepard Scholarship Fund, The Tuckerman Family Breast Cancer Research Endowment Fund; and approved changing the name of the Morgan Horvitz Fund in Veterinary Medicine to The Marcy and Richard Horvitz Veterinary Scholarship Fund.
Personnel Appointments- M. Ronald Glaser of NORWICH TOWNSHIP has been named interim associate vice president for health sciences research and vice dean for research in the College of Medicine and Public Health, effective Dec. 1, 2000, through Nov. 30, 2001. Glaser has been serving as associate vice president for health sciences research and professor in the Departments of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics, and Internal Medicine.
- Barry K. Goodwin had been named professor and holder of The Andersons Endowed Chair in Agricultural Marketing, Trade and Policy in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics, effective Oct.1, 2001. Goodwin is currently a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C.
- Daniel D. Sedmak of COLUMBUS (43235) has been named interim associate vice president for health sciences education and vice dean for education in the College of Medicine and Public Health, effective Jan.22, 2001, through Jan.21, 2002. Sedmak has been serving as chair and professor in the Department of Pathology.
- James P. Tressel has been named head football coach in the Department of Athletics, effective Jan.17, 20001 through Jan.16, 2006. He previously served as head football coach at Youngstown State University.
- Muthu Periasamy has been named chair of the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, effective April 1, 2001, through Sept. 30, 2005.
- Jack A. Rall, professor of physiology, has been reappointed interim chair of the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, effective Jan. 1, 2001, through March 31, 2001.
- Paul A. Weber of UPPER ARLINGTON, professor of ophthalmology, has been reappointed chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, effective Jan. 1, 2001, through Dec. 31, 2001.
