Polar Researcher discusses new research on global warming

On Sunday, (2/18), an Ohio State University polar researcher will announce important research findings on the effects of global warming on the planet. Lonnie Thompson, a professor of geological sciences, will discuss results of research by scientists at the Byrd Polar Research Center in a major presentation to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in San Francisco. Details of the research conclusions are embargoed until after Thompson's talk at 10 a.m. PT, Sunday, February 18. Several hundred scientists and reporters are expected to attend the presentation.

Thompson co-researcher at the Byrd Center, Ellen Mosley-Thompson, will speak to central Ohio news media about the findings at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 19, in room 140 of the Byrd Polar Research Center, 1090 Carmack Road. Mosley-Thompson is a professor of geography and research scientist at the Byrd Center, and part of the ice core paleoclimatology research group. Dramatic photographs that illustrate the recent effects of global warming will be available.

The Thompsons and their colleagues have been involved in groundbreaking research on the effects of global warming. For the last 25 years, they have traveled to remote ice caps and glaciers on five continents, retrieving ice cores that contain a record of the earth's climate history trapped inside the ice.
