COLUMBUS -- Three new endowed chairs were approved by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees at its meeting Friday (3/2). In addition, trustees accepted 23 new named endowed funds for a total of $5.7 million in gifts to the university.
The Raymond E. Mason Chair in Transportation and Logistics, funded at $1.26 million will provide support for a faculty chair in the fields of transportation and logistics in the Fisher College of Business. The John G. Boutselis, M. D., Chair in Gynecology, funded at $1.24 million, will support a faculty chair position in gynecological oncology in the College of Medicine and Public Health. The Edgar C. Hendrickson Designated Chair in Biomedical Engineering, funded at $1.9 million, will support the research of an outstanding member of the biomedical engineering faculty in the College of Engineering.
Trustees also accepted 229 research grants and contracts awarded to the Ohio State University Research Foundation during the month of January for a total of $25.4 million.
New named endowed funds are as follows:
- The Barbara J. Bonner Lung Cancer Research Endowment Fund, $300,000, to support research by the holder of the Barbara J. Bonner Chair in Lung Cancer Research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center – The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute

The Alex and Betty Schoenbaum Undergraduate Support Fund, $200,000, to support activities and programs in the Fisher College of Business Schoenbaum Undergraduate Program Building
- The Frank R. Sheeran Memorial Fellowship Fund in Advanced Practice Nursing, $112,718
- The William G. Myers, M.D., Ph.D. Endowment Fund, $100,000, to support and maintain the Myers Medical Library and Conference Center and the Myers Archives at the Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
- The George L. and Eleanor M. Kilgore Research Fund in Opthalmology, $67,640
- The Dorothy Bittner Louks Endowment Fund for Research in Ophthalmology, $52,933
- The Jeffrey R. Rodek Fund for Excellence, $52,260, to promote the Fisher College of Business academic program through support of college projects and initiatives
- The Longaberger Diversity Scholarship Fund, $50,000, to support scholarships in the ACCESS Program or a comparable university program
- The Marylou and Ernestine Kuhn Memorial Scholarship Fund, $47,050, to provide scholarships for women graduate students in the College of the Arts
- The Ohio State University College of Nursing Alumni Scholarship Fund, $32,634
- The Charles W. Massey and Ola Belle Massey Printmaking Endowment Fund, $29, 878, to support the professional needs of student, faculty and academic program in printmaking in the Department of Art
- The Sydney N. Fisher Memorial Fund in Ottoman and Turkish Studies, $27, 864
- The Agnes Marshall Gordon Scholarship Fund, $27,131, to support women students based on criteria established by the Columbus Mortar Board Alumni Club
- The Richard B. Sneed Memorial Scholarship Fund, $25,800, to support undergraduate mechanical engineering majors
- The Henry P. and Kathryn A. Kurdziel Education Scholarship Fund, $25,500
- The Bernadine Healy, M.D., Teaching and Research Fund in Medicine and Public Health, $25,405

Amendments to endowed funds
- The name of the The James J. Buffer, Jr., Award in Industrial Technology Education has been changed to The James J. and Loretta C. Buffer Award Fund in Industrial Technology Education.
- The name of the John D. (Jack) and Mary Lambert Ph.D. Award has been changed to The John D. (Jack) and Mary Lambert Ph.D. Scholarship Fund
- The name of the Velma C. Veith Musical Instrument Fund has been changed to the Velma C. and Paul E. Veith Musical Instrument Fund
- The Kettering Biomedical Engineering Scholarship Fund’s description has been revised
Personnel Appointments
Trustees approved the following faculty and staff appointments:
- Robert R. Bahnson, professor of surgery, has been named to The Dave Longaberger Endowed Chair in Urology in the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology, effective March 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005. He currently holds the Louis Levy Professorship in Cancer.
- Jeffrey M. Fowler has been named associate professor and holder of the John G. Boutselis Chair in Gynecology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology, effective March 2, 2001, through June 30, 2005.
- Douglas M. Lambert, professor of marketing, has been named to the Raymond E. Mason Chair in Transportation and Logistics, effective March 2, 2001, through June 30, 2005.
- Mac A. Stewart has been named Vice Provost for Minority Affairs in the Office of Academic Affairs, effective March 2, 2001, through June 30, 2004.
- David Tay has been named director of the Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center, effective May 1, 2001. He is currently director of the Australian Seed and Propagation Technology Centre, University of Queensland, Queensland, Australia.
- Mary Ann Sagaria, associate professor, has been reappointed interim director of the School of Educational Policy and Leadership, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2002.
- C. Bradley Moore, Ohio State University vice president for research, has been named a senior university administrator member of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute Board for a term ending April 30, 2002.

Approved an amendment to the Rules of the University Faculty rescinding a rule concerning student withdrawal for medical reasons.
- Approved the renaming of Drake Union, 1849 Cannon Drive, to The Drake Performance and Event Center.
- Heard a presentation from the student trustees of the university’s Lima, Mansfield, Marion and Newark regional campuses.
- Heard a report on the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ study abroad programs in the Dominican Republic, China, Mexico, England, Southern Africa and the Czech Republic. A special leadership program in offered in Brazil, and a new program in being developed in Australia. Students, accompanied by a resident director, study in the country for six to eight weeks, learning about the economics, sociology, language and culture of the area. The program’s goal is to afford students a more global view of the industries with which they will work upon graduation.
- Heard a presentation on The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy, highlighted by remarks from Sen. and Mrs. Glenn. Ohio State’s Glenn Institute aims to encourage civic engagement among citizens of all ages, explore the place of public service in American life, train public officials for more effective leadership and disseminate fact-based research to all policymakers. The institute also maintains the John Glenn Archive, housing the papers and memorabilia of Sen. Glenn. Students who have participated in three of the institute’s programs – the Academic Internship Program in Washington, D.C., the Glenn Institute’s Living Learning Center and the Internship Program for High School Seniors – spoke to the trustees about their experiences.
