Popular OSU program closing its doors
COLUMBUS -- Since 1973, Ohio State University's Creative Activities Program (CAP) has taught thousands how to mix margaritas, explore caves, balance a checkbook, enjoy yoga or learn ballroom dancing. Housed in the Ohio Union, the program offered short, non-credit courses at nights and weekends, taught by a dedicated group of instructors.
CAP will close its doors to the community this week. For the first time in nearly 30 years, there will be no classes when spring quarter begins on March 26.
"It is with a heavy heart that we discontinue the program," says CAP coordinator Beth Ullum. "Over the last few years, we have seen fewer and fewer students enroll, and we have struggled financially."
As Columbus and the suburbs begin to offer CAP-type classes at their local community centers, Ullum says many potential students are instead taking classes closer to home because they offer convenience, free parking, a nice facility and a chance to meet neighbors.
Ullum remains hopeful that someday CAP will again be a vital part of the Ohio State community. Until then, she encourages instructors and students to contact the recreation departments of their local communities for similar programs.
