COLUMBUS --Two new endowed chairs and two new named professorships were among the funds accepted by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees meeting Friday, April 6, at the university’s Marion campus.
The George R. Smith Chair in Engineering has been established with a $1.5 million gift from the estate of George R. Smith, a 1935 graduate of Ohio State’s College of Engineering. The annual income from the gift will support a distinguished senior faculty member. The Dr. Benjamin R. and Helen Slack Wiltberger Memorial Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery, established with a $1.3 million gift from Helen Slack Wiltberger in memory of her late husband, will be held by a nationally eminent orthopedic surgeon/faculty member in the College of Medicine and Public Health.
The C. John Easton Professorship in Engineering was established with sales proceeds from property given to The Ohio State University Foundation by Sensotec Inc. of Columbus and with additional funds from the College of Engineering, totaling $588,552. The professorship honors Easton, founder of Sensotec, for his professional accomplishments as well as other members of the engineering faculty who combine innovative engineering with business acumen.
The D. Warren Brown Designated Professorship in Leukemia Research, established with a $100,000 grant over a five-year period from the Warren Brown Family Foundation of MARION, Ohio, will provide support for a professorship position in the College of Medicine and Public Health and the Comprehensive Cancer Center – The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
In addition, trustees established 19 new named endowed funds for a total of $4.6 million in gifts to the Ohio State University Development Fund and The Ohio State University Foundation. Trustees also accepted $16.3 million in research grants and contracts awarded to the Ohio State University Research Foundation.
Trustees also approved personnel appointments and the awarding of several construction contracts, among other business.
Named Endowed Funds
- The Ohio State University at Lima Scholars Fund, $200,000, provided by gifts to the Ohio State Lima Campaign
- The Michael Oliver Garraway Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, $137,500, provided by gifts from Annie Marie Garraway and the estate of her husband, Michael Oliver Garraway, professor emeritus of plant pathology. The fund will provide support for students in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, with a preference for natives of Domenica or the West Indies.
- The Jeanne Lambert Research and Education Fund in Nanotechnology, $125,000, provided by gifts from Bill G. Lambert (B.S. Bus. Adm, 1968) and Shelia Lambert of NEW YORK, N.Y.
- The Alfred J. Weisbrod Family Scholarship Fund, $103,755, provided by gifts from Alfred J. Weisbrod (B.S. Ed 1965) and family of DAYTON, Ohio, for student athletes participating in men’s baseball.
- The Dr. Harrison D. and Jeanette L. Fortney Athletic Scholarship Fund, $100,000, provided by gifts from Dr. Harrison (D.D.S. 1965) and Jeanette Fortney of SAN DIEGO, Calif., for a member of the varsity football team
- The Bernice Grimm Student Research Endowment Fund, $80,000, provided by gifts from the estate of Bernice Grimm of AKRON, Ohio, for stipends for veterinary students
- The Center for Law, Policy and Social Science Fund, $75,000, provided by a gift from alumni and friends of the College of Law for the center’s operating needs The O’Connell Family Scholarship/Awards Endowment Fund, $50,000, provided by a gift from Christina M. O’Connell and Conleth S. O’Connell, Jr., (M.S. Computer and Information Science, 1986; Ph.D. Computer and Information Science, 1990) of AUSTIN, Texas, for undergraduate scholarships in computer and information science
- The George R. Smith Fund, $40,575, provided by a gift from the estate of George R. Smith to advance the quality of teaching and research in the College of Engineering
- The Paul A. Weber Fellowship Fund in Ophthalmology, $34,195, provided by gifts in honor of Weber, professor and past chairperson of the Department of ophthalmology, to provide research fellowships to graduate students in ophthalmology
- The James R. Thomas Innovation Fund, $31,250, provided by gifts from Thomas (B.S. Bus. Adm. 1950) to promote the activities of faculty and students in the Fisher College of Business
- The Griffith Family Scholarship Endowment Fund, $28,006, provided by gifts from William David (B.S. Agr. 1961), Phyllis Ann (B.S. Medical Technology, 1962), Thomas Edward (B.S. Agr., 1991) and William Douglas Griffith (B.S. Agronomy, 1988) of ADA, Ohio, to support students, preferably from Hardin County, in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
- The Pendergast Global Leadership Endowed Fund, $27,033, provided by gifts from Margaret “Peg” Pendergast, family and friends to provide grants to students working to promote international understanding
The Clarence A. MacDonald Athletic Scholarship Fund, $25,000, provided by gifts from daughter Jean M. Maynard (B.S. Human Ecology, 1946) of SHORT HILLS, N.J.
The O’Connell Family Staff Development Endowment Fund, $25,000, provided by a gift from Christina M. O’Connell and Conleth S. O’Connell, Jr., to benefit computer and information science staff development
- The Gale E. Roshon Family Scholarship Fund, $25,000, provided by gifts from Roshon (B.I.E. 1949) to supplement grant-in-aid scholarship costs of student-athletes
- The Pamela and Dr. G. Scott Drew Endowed Scholarship Fund, $15,000, provided by a gift from Pamela and Dr. G. Scott Drew of MARION, Ohio
- The Vernon G. and Jane S. Ward Aeronautical Research Fund, $8,733, provided by funds from the remainder interest in a 1983 pooled income gift by the late Vernon Ward, retired Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering staff member

- The Harry and Carl Sonkin Memorial Award for Peace and International Understanding, established in 1984, is now the Harry and Esther Sonkin, Carol Bergman, Jeri Sonkin Wasserman and Glenn R. Wasserman Families Scholarship for International Understanding and Peace
Appointments-
Julia F. Andrews of UPPER ARLINGTON (43220) has been named to the Bliss M. and Mildred A. Wiant Designated Professorship in Chinese Literature and Culture in the Department of History of Art, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005. Andrews, a specialist in Chinese painting and modern Chinese art, is associate director of Ohio State’s East Asian Studies Center. Her book, Painters and Politics in the People’s Republic of China (1994) won the Joseph Levenson Prize of the Association for Asian Studies for the best book of the year on modern China.
- Joel H. Saltz of COLLEGE PARK, Md., has been named chief information officer and associate vice president for health sciences, effective May 28, 2001. Saltz is currently professor and director of informatics in the Department of Pathology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Maryland, College Park. He will chair the newly formed Department of Medical Informatics in the College of Medicine and Public Health
- Robert H. Wagoner of POWELL has been named to the George R. Smith Chair in Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2006. Wagoner, who received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State, is Distinguished Professor of Engineering, professor of materials science and engineering and professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio State. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and serves as director of the university’s Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing of Automotive Components.
- James C. Williams of NEW ALBANY has been named dean of the College of Engineering, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2004. He is currently holder of the Honda Chair for Transportation in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Williams joined Ohio State in 1999 after holding research and leadership positions at General Electric, Boeing and Rockwell. He spent 13 years at Carnegie Mellon University, serving on the faculty and as dean of engineering. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in metallurgical engineering from the University of Washington.
- Brian D. Joseph of UPPER ARLINGTON (43220) has been reappointed Kenneth E. Naylor Professor in the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Literatures, effective October 1, 2001, through September 30, 2006.
- Richard J. Solove of WESTERVILLE has been reappointed to the board of The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, effective May 14, 2001 to May 13, 2005.
Department Chairperson appointments
- Joel H. Saltz has been appointed chairperson of the Department of Anatomy and Medical Education, effective May 28, 2001, through June 30, 2005. (See “Appointments” above)
- Clark S. Larsen has been named chairperson of the Department of Anthropology in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005. An internationally recognized authority on bioarchaeology, Larsen currently is the Amos Hawley Distinguished Term Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He holds a B.A. in anthropology from Kansas State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in biological anthropology from the University of Michigan. Larsen is president of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and will assume the editorship of the American Journal of Anthropology on May 1.
- Kenneth W. Goings has been named chairperson of the Department of African-American and African Studies in the College of Humanities, effective October 1, 2001, through September 30, 2005. Currently Dunavant University Professor at the University of Memphis in Tennessee, Goings holds a B.S. in Education from Kent State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. He has twice won the Outstanding Book Award on the Subject of Human Rights from the Gustavus Myers Center for his books, Mammy and Uncle Mose: Black Collectibles and American Stereotyping (1994) and The N.A.A.C.P.Comes of Age: The Defeat of Judge John J. Parker (1990). He has also held faculty positions at The College of Wooster, Rhodes College in Memphis and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

Jonathan Beard, a graduate student at Ohio State Marion, was presented the student recognition award. Beard received his associate of arts and his bachelor of science in education from and will plans to complete his Master of Education in June of 2002, all from Ohio State Marion. As an undergraduate, Beard was student coordinator of student activities and recreation and administrative assistant in charge of building operations for the George H. Alber Student Center OSU Marion and Marion Technical College. Beard also is the student representative to the Marion Campus Outreach and Engagement Committee.
