Two hundred girls to participate in Women in Science Day

Workshops introduce students to science-related fields

About 200 sixth- to ninth-grade girls from 12 area schools will be attending science workshops at The Ohio State University’s Women in Science Day, 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday (5/11), on the Columbus campus.  This is the 15th Women in Science Day event that Ohio State has hosted.

Valeriana Moeller, a chemist and president of Columbus State Community College, will give the keynote address, at noon in the West Ballroom, Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St.

Ohio State’s Women in Science Day is designed to show girls that women are succeeding in science-related fields.  Through workshops, presented by 25 women faculty and staff, girls will be introduced to various science-related professions and fields of study, including architecture, chemistry, engineering, dentistry and laboratory medicine. The workshops are scheduled for either 9:30 a.m. or 1:15 p.m.

As an example of the workshops, girls who attend the Laboratory Medicine workshop will compare the differences between cancerous cells and non-cancerous cells.
The Association for Women in Science of Central Ohio and The Ohio State University are co-sponsors of this daylong event.
