Young Scholars take part in a night of formal dinner, dancing

Event designed to prepare students for professional future

About 50 of Ohio State University’s senior-year Young Scholars will show off their newly attained etiquette skills during an Evening of Enchantment, complete with fine dining, ballroom dancing and formal attire, 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday (7/19), at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road.

This summer about 350 high school students are participating in the Young Scholars Summer Academy program, which helps familiarize them with collegiate life.

The Young Scholars program was developed in 1988 as a statewide model to increase the number of minority students at four-year universities.  Selected by their school districts, the students enter the program in the sixth-grade and participate until they graduate from high school.

For Thursday’s event, the senior-year Young Scholars will practice their etiquette skills, including introductions, eating and conversation, in a formal setting.  In preparation, a dance instructor from Arthur Murray’s studio also taught the students the tango, the meringue, the waltz and ballroom dancing.
