Time Magazine, CNN name OSU geologist one of "America's Best" – Ohio State University geologist Lonnie Thompson has been named one of America’s best scientists by Time magazine and the Cable News Network. Thompson astonished global change experts in February when he reported that within 15 years, massive mountainous ice caps and glaciers around the world would melt because of global warming. Thompson, a professor of geological sciences, is one of five U.S. scientists and physicians honored this week by the national television news media as being tops in their field. The television network announced the honor during the hour-long documentary "CNN Presents: America's Best" on Sunday night. Time is featuring Thompson in the current issue of the magazine. Avoiding dehydration important for athletes – Heat and humidity can place athletes at extreme risk for heat stroke but with the proper precautions, the potential for injury can be minimized, according to the team physician of The Ohio State University football team. As high school football practices and other outdoor activities heat up, the heat-related death of Korey Stringer of the Minnesota Vikings should serve as a constant reminder that hot weather can be dangerous, according to Dr. John Lombardo, team physician for Ohio State. "Every year we hear of athletes stricken by the heat during workouts and it happens to people who are young and in otherwise excellent physical shape," said Lombardo, who also is medical director of the OSU Sports Medicine Center. Lombardo said athletes and their parents should take every possible precaution before starting workouts in extreme heat and humidity. He advises young athletes to drink plenty of water before, during and after the workout. Contact: David Crawford, Medical Center Communications, (614) 293-3737.
