News

Don’t forget to take your medicine – Mail and telephone reminders to encourage patients to take their prescription medication as directed may be a pointless exercise, a new study suggests. Robert Guthrie, study author and a professor of emergency medicine at Ohio State University, finds that one out of five patients who were frequently reminded did not take their medication as prescribed—about the same proportion of those who did not receive special reminders. Guthrie says “doctor-patient relationships drive compliance, not postal and telephone reminders.” Contact: Robert Guthrie, 614-298-8052; See http://www.osu.edu/researchnews/archive/nocomply.htm

What to do when children are victiminzed by the classroom bully – Nearly one-third of all middle and high school students are affected by bullying. An Ohio State University psychologist says although some adults think bullying is just another part of growing up, parents should intervene if a child is being victiminzed. Dr. Jill Goldberg Arnold, a child psychologist in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at OSU & Harding Behavioral Healthcare and Medicine, says children might carry their roles as victim and bully into their adult lives. Goldberg Arnold says parents should periodically check in with children with questions about social situations at school, in particular recess, because less structured times are typically when there are more opportunities for bullying. She says parents should let their child know that he or she does not have to deal with the situation alone, and also let school officials know what's happening on the playground or classroom. Adjusting back-to-school sleep schedules – The start of another school year can be an unsettling thought for many school-agers, but abrupt changes in sleep habits can take a physical and mental toll on their health. Dr. Jeffrey E. Weiland, a specialist in sleeping disorders at The Ohio State University Medical Center, says parents should ease children into the school-year sleep schedule by gradually moving up bedtimes and setting the alarm clock earlier each morning. Weiland says it can take a few weeks to adjust the biological clocks to a new and earlier time. Contact: Erin Hughes, University Medical Center, (614) 293-3737.
