Ohio State holds candlelight vigil to commemorate tragedies

The Ohio State University community will gather for a candlelight vigil at sundown Wednesday (Sept. 19) on the oval to commemorate the tragic events of last week.  Instrumental music will begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by the program at 8 p.m.

During the vigil, held on the night of the first day of classes, Ohio State English professor and poet David Citino will read a poem he wrote for the occasion. President William E. Kirwan; Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Eddie Pauline; Louise Douce, director of Counseling and Consultation Services; Jesse David Hill, pastor of University Lutheran Chapel; and other university members will make remarks.

The event is intended to allow university community members to express their support for one another and to recognize tolerance, acknowledge grief and become stronger as a community.

Those who wish to contribute to relief funds for the victims and families of the tragedies will receive white ribbons, which are symbolic of the Ohio State community’s sympathy and solidarity.  The Honor Guard will symbolize the personnel serving in our nation’s rescue and recovery efforts, and those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Students, led by USG, are involved in the planning and operation of the event. They will staff information tents at the entrances of the event site, where candles and programs will be distributed. Students will be ushers and begin the candle lighting.
