In competition for Hyundai auto plant, Ohio offers more
OSU automotive research center helps state offer what others cannot
By offering both engineering research and industrial know-how, Ohio and Ohio State University offer advantages that put us “head and shoulders” above other states competing for a possible Hyundai auto manufacturing plant.
Giorgio Rizzoni, director of Ohio State’s Center for Automotive Research and Intelligent Transportation, (CAR-IT) says Ohio has a number of automotive suppliers and product developers already in place (Ohio is second only to Michigan in the number of providers). It also has a well-established, industry-oriented research center at Ohio State.
CAR-IT is an interdisciplinary university research center supported by the Transportation Research Endowment Program (TREP) and by industry and government grants and contracts.
States competing for Hyundai are only now beginning to fund such research centers.
Rizzoni says Ohio offers not only CAR-IT, which is a national and international center of excellence; it offers close proximity to the Transportation Research Center, which is the largest industry-operated automotive proving ground in the nation.
In addition, Hyundai supports two Ohio State engineering students currently studying at CAR-IT.
