Costume Collection Exhibit Preview Aug. 22 BEHIND THE SCENES MUSEUM TOUR TO BENEFIT COSTUME COLLECTION COLUMBUS -- Fans of fashions can get a sneak peak at the developing "Reel to Real" costume exhibit at the Columbus Museum of Art Aug. 22. The art museum and Historic Costume and Textiles Collection of The Ohio State University will offer an opportunity for the public to look "behind-the-scenes" at an exhibition in progress three weeks before the Sept. 12 opening of "Reel to Real: The Hollywood Designer After Film." The nearly four-month long exhibit features prized garments by Adrian, Irene, Howard Greer, Edith Head and other Hollywood designers after they left the world of film and opened their own salons or wholesale ready-to-wear businesses. Shown will be clothing worn by Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Rosalind Russell, Lauren Bacall, Beverly D'Angelo, Betty Furness, Carroll Baker, Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, and Gypsy Rose Lee. The preview will allow guests to visit two of the museum galleries and learn where the highly prized garments of the designers came from, how a garment is fitted on a mannequin or dress form, how platforms on which the mannequins and dress forms stand are constructed and their sizes and shapes determined, and the role of mannequin placement, wall and platform colors and lighting, among other factors. "It is a departure for the personnel of an established museum and a fine costume collection to present such a behind- the-scenes glimpse" said Charles Kleibacker, designer in residence in the College of Human Ecology. The program begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception in Derby Court. Guests will be able to visit the Museum's Sculpture Garden and the two galleries at their leisure. Dress is informal and casual. Tickets are $25. Reservations are required by Aug. 17. Checks may be made to The Ohio State University/Costume Collection and sent to Doris Utzinger, 2842 Annabelle Court, Grove City, Ohio 43213. More information is available by calling Kleibacker at 614-292-3090. Admission to the Sept. 12-Jan. 2 exhibit is free for members, $2.50 for students and senior citizens, and $4.75 for adults. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays. # Contact: Charles Kleibacker, Historic Costume and Textiles Collection, (614) 292-3090 or Mary Ellison, Columbus Museum of Art, (614) 221-6801.
