Young Scholars to Hold Mock Trials

 YOUNG SCHOLARS TO TAKE PART IN MOCK TRIALS OF RODNEY KING CASE

     Tenth-grade students who are attending The Ohio State
University's Young Scholars Summer Institute will take part in a
mock trial that will look at the Rodney King case on Wednesday
(8/4) in the Central Classroom Building, 2009 Millikin Road.
There will be three different trials, beginning at 8 a.m., 9:30
a.m. and 11 a.m.

     The students, who are part of Ohio State's Young Scholars
Program, will complete the three-week summer institute on Friday.
The tenth grade students have been at Ohio State since July 19,
attending classes, participating in cultural activities, and
sampling college life.

     Now in its fifth year, the Young Scholars Program is Ohio
State's effort to increase the number of Black, Hispanic and
other underrepresented minority youth from low income families
who are prepared to attend four-year colleges and universities.
Students come from nine major Ohio cities and enter the program
at the end of the sixth grade.

     According to James Bishop, head of the Young Scholars
Program, the mock trial will be a learning experience for the
students as they look at the various courtroom procedures and
viewpoints.  The students will take such roles as defendants,
Rodney King, the videographer, police experts, medical experts,
prosecuting and defense attorneys, witnesses and a judge.
