UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS PLANS EXPANDING CLINIC TO WEST CAMPUS

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University is planning to design
and build a comprehensive ambulatory medical care facility
somewhere on the western part of the Columbus campus.

     The Board of Trustees on Wednesday (9/1) voted to select
architectural and engineering firms as necessary to choose a site
and design the facility.  University Hospitals officials estimate
the total project cost at about $21,250,000.

     Last month, the Hospitals Board approved $1.75 million in
planning funds for the work.

     Larry Anstine, administrative director of clinics and
practice plan services, said the building would relieve pressure
on the existing clinic at 456 W. 10th Ave., which is fully
occupied and located in a congested area.  A West Campus clinic
would allow patients to travel more easily to receive
consultation and treatment.

     "We're looking at building a multi-specialty ambulatory
clinic.  The firms that we're looking at will help us evaluate
the site as well as plan the programming and design of the actual
facility," Anstine said.

     The concept is for a core of hospital ancillary services
such as X-ray, laboratory, and pharmacy, to go with office space
for physicians to see their patients.

     "We've maxed out in the space we have in the current clinic
building," Anstine said.  "We'd like to build a new facility that
is more patient friendly, easy for the patients to get to, with
adequate surface parking."

     To be decided is which parts of the existing clinic will
stay and which will move to West Campus.

     Anstine said he hopes to see the new clinic open within
three and a half years.

OHIO STATE TO CONSTRUCT PARK, PARKING LOT

     Trustees also voted to seek bids for construction of:

     ~ A parking lot near LeFevre Hall on the Newark Regional
Campus,
     ~ An outdoor park on Cannon Drive on the Columbus Campus to
accommodate active and passive recreation and structured programs
for the patients of Dodd Hall, and
     ~ Improvements to Stewart House, 231 W. 10th Ave., including
a new electrical system, a renovated kitchen, minor cosmetic
improvements, and access for people with disabilities.  The house
will be used as a treatment center for pregnant drug abusers.

     Total project costs, including construction, are estimated
at $194,000 in campus funds for the Newark project; $224,900 for
the park, and $150,000 for Stewart House.  Funding for the last
two projects is being provided by University Hospitals.

TRUSTEES SELL LAND, GRANT EASEMENTS

     In other actions, the board:

     ~ Voted to sell for $3,890 a small strip of land along 460
Havens Corners Road in front of a MedOhio facility to the Ohio
Department of Transportation, which plans to use it to make road
improvements.

     ~ Granted easements for strips of land to Ohio Bell
Telephone Co. for 15 years at 1275 Kinnear Road, to Tiger Oil
Inc. for a 15-year renewal period at the Eastern Ohio Resource
Development Center; to Columbus Southern Power Co. for 15 years
for relocating electric pole lines due to the Hamilton and Havens
Corners Road improvement, and to Evelyn E. Gonawein for a 15-year
renewal period for driveway access to her land adjoining the
Vegetable Crops Branch of the Ohio Agricultural Research and
Development Center on Sandusky County Road 43.

TRUSTEES CREATE NAMED FUNDS, HEAR DEVELOPMENT REPORT

     Trustees created the Irene D. Hirsch Chair in Ophthalmology
to provide a faculty position for a distinguished researcher in
diseases and treatment of the eyes.  The chair was funded with
$1.3 million from the estate of Irene D. Hirsch (B.S. Ed '26).

     Trustees also created 10 new endowed funds, created with
private gifts to the university.  They are: The Dr. Samuel T. and
Lois Felts Mercer Professorship in Medicine and Pharmacology
Fund, $286,877; The Barbara Brentlinger Fergus Athletic
Scholarship Fund for Women's Basketball, $100,000; The Phyllis
Krumm Memorial Internationla Scholarship Fund, $58,165; The
Grayce M. Sills Professorship Fund (nursing), $25,914; The John
Meagher, M.D. Lectureship Fund in Neurosurgery, $23,000; The
Tuscarawas County 4-H Endowment Fund, $17,240; The Dr. Norman
Baker Athletic Scholarship Fund, $15,000; The Demkee Dental
Athletic Provider Award, $15,000; The Louis Miller Scholarship
Fund in Pharmacy, $15,000; and the R.E."Jim" Snelson Scholarship
Fund (dentistry), $15,000.

     Trustees heard a report from Vice President for Development
Jerry May on private fund-raising during the 1992-93 fiscal year.
A total of $89.2 million was received from 80,403 donors.  The
total is 25 percent above the preceding year and does not include
a cartoon collection valued at $9 million.  Donations were up in
every category of giver, with alumni leading the way with a 79
percent increase.  Support was given to the endowment fund, $23.4
million; buildings and equipment, $7 million; programs, $47.9
million; student financial aid, $3 million; college and
department annual funds, $6.4 million; and university annual
fund, $1.2 million.

     The board expressed their appreciation to Alva T. Bonda and
Anita S. Ward for their service to and support of higher
education as members of the Ohio Board of Regents.
