09-09-93 Hoffsis Named Interim Dean of Veterinary Medicine

HOFFSIS NAMED INTERIM DEAN OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

     COLUMBUS -- Glen F. Hoffsis, director of The Ohio State
University Veterinary Hospital, has been named interim dean of
the university's College of Veterinary Medicine, effective
Thursday (9/9).

     The appointment of Hoffsis is subject to approval by the
university's Board of Trustees at its next meeting Oct. 1.

     Hoffsis takes the place of Ronald A. Wright, who resigned as
dean on Thursday.  Wright, who will continue on the faculty as a
professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, was
dean since 1980.

     "Dr. Hoffsis brings to this position broad experience in the
College of Veterinary Medicine and in the university community,
both as an engaged member of the faculty and through his
experience as director of the veterinary hospital," said Richard
Sisson, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost,
in announcing the appointment of Hoffsis.

     Hoffsis will serve until July 1, 1995, or until a national
search is completed for a permanent dean of the college.

     Sisson also thanked Wright for his work as dean.  "I know
that his colleagues join me in expressing our gratitute for his
many years of service to the college," Sisson said.

     Hoffsis, 52, joined the Ohio State faculty as an assistant
professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences in
1970.  He was promoted to full professor in 1979.  From 1970 to
1991, he headed his department's food animal medicine and surgery
section.

     In April 1991, Hoffsis was appointed director of Ohio
State's veterinary hospital at 601 Tharp St.  With more than
20,000 annual visits, the hospital is one of the largest and
highest quality university veterinary hospitals in North America.

     A livestock specialist, Hoffsis conducts research on
metabolic and infectious diseases in food-producing animals.  He
teaches the diagnosis and treatment of cattle diseases.

     He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1962, a
doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1966 and a master's
degree in internal medicine in 1969, all from Ohio State.  He
served his internship in veterinary medicine at Colorado State
University in 1966-67.

     Hoffsis and his family live in Ashville, Ohio.

     Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine is the nation's
third oldest.  The college has 100 faculty members in five
departments and enrolls about 520 veterinary students and about
150 graduate students and residents.
