09-14-93 Welcome Week Activities for Students WELCOME WEEK ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR NEW, RETURNING STUDENTS COLUMBUS -- A convocation for new students on Monday, Sept. 20, highlights Welcome Week activities at The Ohio State University. Residence halls open on Saturday, Sept. 18, and autumn quarter classes begin on Wednesday, Sept. 22. In the days between, a number of programs and activities are planned for new and returning students. The day by day Welcome Week schedule is: Saturday, Sept. 18 Residence halls officially open for the new year. Move-in is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Some campus streets and parking lots will be restricted to move-in traffic during these hours, and officers will direct traffic at major intersections. Orientation Welcome Leaders (OWLs) will help unload cars and carry belongings into the residence halls. While students are unpacking and meeting their roommates, parents can attend a seminar to learn about programs, facilities and staff of the residence halls. Furniture and carpet sales will be held at the Ohio Union. Carpets will also be sold in residence hall parking lots. Sunday, Sept. 19 Residence hall move-in, carpet and furniture sales continue. Residence hall student organizations offer evening social programs such as ice party or movies. Two bands will play on the west lawn of the Ohio Union, one jazz and one caruso. Monday, Sept. 20 The Council of Graduate Students will host a new student orientation from 8 a.m. to noon in the West Ballroom on the Ohio Union. President Gee will speak, there will be maps and information, and a question and answer session. New students attend their first class: UVC 100, an orientation to the university, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. New student convocation begins at 11 a.m. in St. John Arena. Program includes comments from President E. Gordon Gee, Vice President for Student Affairs David Williams, Undergraduate Student Government President Chris Norman, women's basketball coach Nancy Darsch, and Faculty Senate President Thomas York. The Men's Glee Club will conclude the event by teaching the new students to sing "Carmen Ohio," the university alma mater. The convocation will be followed by a picnic hosted by President Gee at French Field House from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the afternoon, Residence and Dining Halls will present two seminars by Bob Hall, noted lecturer on dating relationships. Called "Hands Off! Let's Talk," the presentation is designed to help students prevent the circumstances that lead to date rapes. The University Honors Center will host an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. at Kuhn Honors House, 220 W. 12th Ave. The residence hall student organizations will present social activities in the evening. Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity will hold a dance in the Ohio Union West Ballroom from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21 The annual Student Organization Fair will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on the West Lawn of the Ohio Union. Student groups will have information booths about their programs and activities and will be recruiting new members. Each of the three areas of residence halls (North, South, Olentangy) will hold panel discussions called "Orientation to the First Day of Classes" from 4 to 5 p.m. Upper class students, faculty and staff will discuss what to expect and share information and strategies for academic success.
