09-17-93 Crane to Move Trees


                         NEWS ADVISORY:
    CRANE TO LIFT TREES INTO NEW HOME 7 STORIES ABOVE GROUND

     Banana trees and other very large plant specimens will be
swinging from a construction crane over 12th Avenue on The Ohio
State University campus tomorrow (9/17) morning.  The plants are
being moved from the old greenhouses behind the Botany and
Zoology Building at the corner of 12th and Neil Avenues into the
new greenhouse facility atop the 12th Avenue Parking Garage, just
to the west.

     Moving the trees is the final step in the move-in process
for the greenhouse, which is shared by the departments of Plant
Biology and Entomology in the College of Biological Sciences.
Insects and smaller plants have already been moved.

     The crane is scheduled to arrive between 8 and 9 a.m. and to
be in action for three to four hours.

     The new greenhouse provides many benefits to the teaching
and research programs of the college:
     ~ State-of-the art climate control
     ~ Plant growth chambers
     ~ Entomology research laboratories
     ~ Insect quarantine laboratory
     ~ Staff offices
     ~ Quality space for botanical and insect specimens.

     The new greenhouse project included the addition of three
more floors (300 parking spaces) to the existing parking garage.
Total project cost was $7.3 million, of which $4 million came
from the state of Ohio and the remainder from the university's
Traffic and Parking Division
