10-8-93 Ohio State Ranked "Best Buy"

U.S. NEWS PICKS OHIO STATE AS A 'BEST BUY' IN HIGHER EDUCATION

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University is one of the 25 "best
college buys" among national universities, according to U.S. News
& World Report magazine.  "The good news is that some of the best
buys are at America's best colleges," the magazine says.

     In its Oct. 11 issue, U.S. News lists best values among
universities in four categories: national universities (Ohio
State's category), national liberal arts colleges, regional
universities, and regional liberal arts colleges.  To qualify,
universities had to rank at or near the top of their category in
this year's U.S. News "America's Best Colleges" survey of
academic quality, published in the Oct. 4 issue.  Ohio State's
academic reputation was ranked 31st among all national
universities and 13th among all public universities in the
quality survey.

     To compute value, the magazine divided each university's
quality rank by the combined cost of a year's out-of-state
tuition, room and board at the university.

     The Big Ten universities fared extremely well in the
national university rankings.  Joining Ohio State among the 25
"Best College Buys" were Penn State, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa,
Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Among the 25 national universities in
the runners-up category were Big 10 institutions Michigan State,
Northwestern and Michigan, as well as two Ohio universities, Case
Western Reserve and Miami.

     Cost of a year's undergraduate tuition, room and board on
Ohio State's Columbus campus for a non-Ohio resident is $13,149.
Comparable figures from other top-ranked universities include:
California Institute of Technology, $20,925; University of North
Carolina, $12,556; University of Virginia, $15,868, Penn State
University, $14,100; and University of Minnesota, $12,414.

     Some figures from the runners-up category include Cornell
University, $24,l89; Duke University, $22,710; Miami University,
$13,010; and University of Michigan, $19,893.

     Ohio residents pay $7,235 per year for tuition, room and
board at Ohio State.

     "This report confirms what we have been saying all along,"
said Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee.  "Ohio State offers a
top-rate academic experience at a very reasonable cost.  We are
continuing our historic tradition of making quality higher
education accessible."
