10-15-93 Ohio State Participates in Alcohol Awareness Week NEWS ADVISORY: OHIO STATE PARTICIPATES IN ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK The Ohio State University is participating in National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week Oct. 17-23. Activities on campus next week will highlight the danger of mixing drinking and driving, will discuss the signs of alcohol abuse and dependency, and will offer social alternatives to alcohol. For young people not yet 21 years of age, purchase of alcoholic beverages is illegal in Ohio. That prohibition, however, has not stopped many young people from drinking excessively. Please join with Ohio State to inform your audience of the problems and dangers of drinking by young adults. The first event is the Residence Life Punch Bowl, a lively quiz show competition among teams representing 13 residence hall complexes, on Sunday, Oct. 17, from 8-10 p.m. in the Royer Student Activities Center, 85 Curl Drive. The contestants will be challenged with questions about alcohol. Just before the final round, a "mocktail contest" will be held for the best recipe for a non-alcoholic beverage. Other activities will be held throughout the week in the residence halls. For information, contact Rebecca Parker, associate director for residence life, 292-3930. Barbara Babb, a critical care flight nurse, will speak on the tragic consequences of drinking and driving on Monday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Ohio Union Main Ballroom, 1739 N. High St. Her presentation, "Tying One On," is based on her experience in responding to alcohol-related car crashes. The staff of Ohio State's Student Health Service will present a free health and fitness fair on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wilce Student Health Center, 1875 Millikin Road. For information on Babb's presentation, the health and fitness fair and Ohio State's alcohol abuse programs, contact Randi Love, coordinator of health promotion with Student Health Services, at 292-4527.
