11-30-93 Scholarships Awarded to Accounting Students SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN ACCOUNTING STUDENTS Five accounting students in Ohio State University's College of Business were awarded a total of $3,500 in scholarships at the 15th Annual Central Region Student Conference and Scholarship Awards Dinner sponsored by the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. "This is an outstanding recognition for our college," said David Harrison, director of minority student services for the College of Business. "Of six scholarships awarded to Central Region students, five went to Ohio State students." Twelve students from Ohio State attended the central region conference earlier this fall in Columbus. This region includes NABA chapters in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Ohio. NABA, founded in 1969 by nine New York African-American accountants, assists minorities in the acounting field to reach their career goals. Dedicated to uniting accountants and accounting students with similar interests and ideas, NABA is committed to professional and academic excellence. With a membership of over 4,500, the organization includes individuals serving in accounting, auditing, finance and general management positions. Ohio State students who were awarded scholarships from the Columbus chapter of NABA were: -- Nicole A. Woodard, a senior from Columbus, who received the Society Bank Award of $1,000. -- Kenneth A. Darby, a senior from Fairfield, Ohio, who received the Dr. Julian M. Earls Award of $750. -- Angela D. Smith, a senior from Columbus, who received $500. -- Bonita R. McGee, a sophomore from Akron, who received $500. -- Danielle L. Smith, a junior from Toledo, who received $500. The Columbus chapter also presented the McDonald's Corp. Award of $1,000 to Terrance L. Addison, a student at Ohio Wesleyan University. Candidates for the Columbus chapter's NABA scholarships must be currently enrolled undergraduate accounting majors who attend universities in central Ohio or who are from Central Ohio. They must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 and a 2.75 in their major. They also must have accumulated at least 80 quarter hours or 48 semester hours of college work and/or have completed intermediate accounting. The conference provided students an opportunity to meet accountants and professionals from Fortune 500 companies. In addition to recognizing students with scholarships, students were given opportunities to interview for entry level positions and for internships with major corporations over a two-day period. "The conference is used as a stepping stone for students about to graduate," said Janet J. Walker, scholarship chairperson for the Columbus Chapter of NABA. "It is excellent opportunity for students to meet with representatives from corporations such as IBM, General Mills, Amoco, AT&T, Baxter Healthcare and Monsanto," Walker said, "Companies were very impressed, we had plenty of students with 4.0 grade point averages." Harrison said financial support from the university's Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems permitted nine students to attend the NABA conference. Harrison's Minority Student Services office in the College of Business supported the attendance of three additional students. Harrison expressed appreciation for the commitment by Professor Lawrence Tomassini, chair of the accounting department, to send the students. Business students receive financial aid, tutoring, academic advising, career placement support including internships, coops and full-time placement through Minority Student Services office. "This is just the beginning of opportunities for minority students in the College of Business," Harrison said. Harrison is developing plans for students to attend the Fourth Annual Hispanic Student Leadership Conference to be held February 1994 at the University of Texas in Houston. The conference is designed to aid job placement. # Contact: David Harrison, 292-1017. Written by Amy Ax.
