01-26-94 Pharmacy Scholarships OHIO PHARMACY COLLEGES WILL AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS TO MINORITIES The four pharmacy colleges in Ohio have established a new scholarship program to increase the number of pharmacy students from underrepresented minority groups and to broaden the cultural diversity of the profession. Ohio Northern University, The Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Toledo have created the Merck Minority/Ohio Colleges of Pharmacy Scholarship Program. Beginning this winter, the program annually will award six $1,000 scholarships at each college to minority students who choose a career in pharmacy. "This program reflects the long tradition among Ohio's colleges of pharmacy to work together on issues to advance the profession," explained Alan Escovitz, executive director of the Council of Ohio Colleges of Pharmacy. The scholarships are supported by a grant from The Merck Foundation with matching funds from each of the four colleges. The council has contacted all high school senior guidance counselors and science department chairs to inform them about the new scholarship program and the many career options for pharmacy students. In addition, the four colleges hope to enlist the help of individuals and community groups in identifying those students who may benefit from this scholarship program and are interested in a career in pharmacy. Underrepresented minority groups included in the scholarship program are African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans. Escovitz said that almost without exception students who graduate with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy quickly find positions. "There are a range of employment opportunities in hospitals, clinics, community practice, the pharmaceutical industry, government, research and education," he said. For more information on the scholarship program, contact the dean of each college or Alan Escovitz, executive director, Council of Ohio Colleges of Pharmacy, 500 W. 12th Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43210, or telephone (614) 292-5380. # [Submitted by: REIDV (reidv@ccgate.ucomm.ohio-state.edu) Wed, 26 Jan 1994 10:40:53 -0500 (EST)] All documents are the responsibility of their originator.
