03-01-94 Scholarship Competition NEWS ADVISORY 730 STUDENTS TO COMPETE FOR OHIO STATE SCHOLARSHIPS Approximately 730 top high school seniors will be at The Ohio State University Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 3-5, to take part in the fourth annual Presidential and Medalist Scholarship Competition. About one-third will attend each day. Events will be headquartered at the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. The top ten finalists will be awarded Presidential Scholarships, which cover in-state tuition, room and board, books and other expenses for four years of undergraduate education at Ohio State. The current value of these "full-ride" Presidential Scholarships is $10,275 per year. The next 30 finalists will be awarded Medalist Scholarships, which cover in-state undergraduate tuition for four years -- currently valued at $2,940 per year. All the scholarship competition participants have already been designated University Scholars on the basis of their high school academic achievements; generally they rank in the top 3 percent of their graduating classes. All of the participants have applied for admission to Ohio State. Most are from Ohio, though some are coming from as far away as Hawaii and California. While on campus, the students will be writing a two-hour essay examination. A faculty committee will evaluate the essays to select the scholarship winners. In addition to the essay exam, students and their parents will attend several programs during the day to acquaint them with the university. For students, there will be a multi-media program about academic opportunities and tours of university honors housing. Parents will attend information sessions on the Honors program and student financial aid and have opportunities to question a panel of current Honors students, tour the campus and visit Honors housing. Reporters are invited to cover the event and to sit in on any session except the exams. The best time to interview students, parents and university administrators will be after the exams are concluded at noon. A schedule appears on the next page.
