03-15-94 Prof. will Profile Achievements of Yiddish Language PROFESSOR WILL PROFILE ACHIEVEMENTS OF YIDDISH LANGUAGE COLUMBUS -- Yiddish is the 1,000-year-old language of Ashkenazic Jews of Central and East Europe. At its height, the home territory of Yiddish language and culture covered the largest area of Europe of any language and culture, except Russian. Associate Professor Neil Jacobs of The Ohio State University will profile this amazing language in a free, public lecture on Wednesday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bexley High School Auditorium, 326 S. Cassingham Road. Refreshments will follow the lecture. The title of Jacobs' lecture is "A Roadmap to Ourselves: The Rise of Yiddish Language and Civilization." He will discuss the origins and development of Yiddish from its earliest beginnings to its emergence as the language of journalism, political and academic discourse, and a vast national literature. Jacobs is a faculty member in the Department of Near Eastern, Judaic and Hellenic Languages and Literatures. The lecture is the third in a series of four which commemorate the 25th anniversary of Ohio State's College of Humanities.
