04-22-94 Engineering Professor Receives Naval Award OHIO STATE PROFESSOR NAMED YOUNG INVESTIGATOR BY NAVY COLUMBUS -- Winston O. Soboyejo, an Ohio State University faculty member from COLUMBUS (43235), was selected to receive a Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research. According to Rear Adm. Marc Pelaez, chief of naval research, the recognition is designed to attract young scientists and engineers who show exceptional promise for doing creative research and teaching. Soboyejo is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering. He was one of 17 investigators nationwide to be selected for the award from 262 applicants who responded with research proposals. Soboyejo's project, on failure mechanisms in ductile niobium aluminide intermetallics, will be funded for three years with $450,000 from Naval Research. Unlike most intermetallics, which are often as brittle as glass, ductile niobium intermetallics are as flexible as steel. However, the structural properties are not well understood. "We'll study the possible ways in which these new intermetallics can fail under structural loading at high temperatures," Soboyejo said. The new materials were developed by Hamish L. Fraser, a professor of materials science and engineering at Ohio State. Soboyejo said the Navy is interested in the materials for possible use as high-temeprature structural components in fighter aircraft. # Contact: Winston Soboyejo, (614) 292-0996.
