04-22-94 John Wang Named Goldwater Scholar OHIO STATE STUDENT FROM HILLIARD WINS GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP COLUMBUS -- John Wang of 5219 Redlands Drive, HILLIARD (43026), a third-year student at The Ohio State University, has been named to receive one of 250 scholarships for the 1994-95 academic year from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The scholarships are awarded to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories. The Goldwater Scholars are selected on academic merit. More than 1,400 mathematics, science and engineering students were nominated by college and university faculties for the scholarships. The scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to $7,000 per year. Wang plans to pursue a doctorate in microbiology and become a research microbiologist and university professor. For the competition, Wang wrote an essay about about the role of the gene orf1590 in the development of Streptomyces, a genus of soil bacteria. He has been assisting Kathleen E. Kendrick, an associate professor of microbiology, in developing a standard method of gene disruption for Streptomyces griseu. He is treasurer of Ohio Staters Inc., president of his residence hall government, and a member of Helix, the biological sciences honorary, and an Honors Ambassador. He was a member of Romophos, the sophomore honorary, and of the homecoming steering committee. Frank Swenton of Columbus, an Ohio State student in mathematics, won a Goldwater Scholarship last year. This year, Swenton won a National Scince Foundation pre-doctoral grant. He intends to study mathematics this fall in a doctoral program at Princeton University.
