04-26-94 OSU Neighborhood Institute NEWS ADVISORY: NEIGHBORHOOD INSTITUTE LOOKS AT STRATEGIES TO CHANGE CAMPUS AREA On April 30 and May 1, eight groups of people representing Ohio State University students, faculty and staff, as well as area residents and business owners, will participate in a Neighborhood Institute to develop plans to improve personal safety and address climate issues in the campus area. The approximately 60 participants in this pilot project will learn how to develop a community vision, a shared mission and a realistic strategic plan to implement a project of their choosing that addresses the safety and alcohol and other substance abuse issues facing the Ohio State community. The groups will be eligible to receive a $500 grant to help in implementing their strategic plans. The workshop, presented in cooperation with the Franklin County Prevention Institute, will help the participants become better community leaders. Those attending will learn how to develop a community framework, assess strengths, value cultural diversity, choose an issue, maintain community coalitions, make strategic plans, and find and use community resources. The program is funded by three Ohio State offices within the Division of Student Affairs -- Student Life, Student Health Services, and Residence and Dining Halls -- and by the Franklin County Prevention Institute. The groups will present their action plans from 4 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, at the Fawcett Center for Tomorrow. Reporters are invited to attend these presentations and the reception which will follow. # Contacts: Lenora Barnes-Wright, Community Development and Student Judicial Affairs, 292-0748; Ruth Sallee Gresham, Off-Campus Student Services, 292-0100; or Randi Love, Student Health Center, 292-4527.
