05-12-94 Ohio State affirms Office of Minority Affairs 5-12-94 NEWS ADVISORY: OHIO STATE AFFIRMS IMPORTANCE OF MINORITY AFFAIRS OFFICE A story in the May 12 edition of The Lantern, the daily student newspaper at The Ohio State University, incorrectly reported that the responsibilities of the Office of Minority Affairs would be divided among several vice provosts. The story raised concerns among many students, faculty, staff and community people that the Office of Minority Affairs would be eliminated. The Office of Minority Affairs has the primary responsibility for recruiting and retaining minority students at Ohio State. The head of that office, LeRoy Pernell, interim vice provost for minority affairs, reports to the university's provost. Provost Richard Sisson last week announced a reorganization and streamlining of his Office of Academic Affairs. He explained that reorganization May 11 at a meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs. As part of that reorganization, the duties of the Office of International Affairs will be divided among other offices. The Lantern story incorrectly reported that the Office of Minority Affairs would be divided. Sisson has reaffirmed that the Office of Minority Affairs will not be downgraded nor have its duties decreased. On the contrary, he said, the office is likely to be given additional responsibilities in the near future.
