06-03-94 Provost Names Grad Teaching Fellows PROVOST RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING GRADUATE TEACHING ASSOCIATES COLUMBUS -- Five graduate students at The Ohio State University have been named the first recipients of the Provost's Teaching Fellowship. Richard Sisson, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, has created the new program to recognize and enhance teaching skills among the university's graduate teaching associates. The award winners were announced during the annual Graduate School Awards reception on June 2. They were chosen from among the winners of the Graduate Associate Teaching Awards by a committee composed of members of the Academy of Teaching. The Academy of Teaching is an organization of faculty members who provide leadership in enhancing teaching at the university. Its members all have received the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, Ohio State's top recognition for outstanding teaching. To qualify for the new Provost's Teaching Fellowship, candidates must have a commitment for a teaching associate position in their department for the following academic year. Each is an advanced graduate student working toward a Ph.D. degree and has demonstrated excellence in teaching. During the summer following the award, the Provost's Teaching Fellows will be matched with members of the Academy of Teaching, who will serve as mentors in developing innovative, high quality teaching approaches and techniques to be used in the fellows' classes during the coming academic year. Fellows will receive a stipend for the summer, equal to their stipend during a regular academic quarter. The faculty mentor's department will receive $2,000 to enhance teaching programs in the department. The winners of the fellowship and their mentors are: =FE Terrell L.
