OHIO STATE BOARD APPOINTS 11 TRUSTEES TO NEWARK CAMPUS

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees
Wednesday (8/31) appointed 11 people to serve as the first board
of trustees of The Ohio State University at Newark.

     The Newark board, established on April 8, replaces the
Citizens Council, and includes nine Newark area residents, one
student and one university-wide trustee.  All appointments were
made retroactive to July 1.

     "These individuals are leaders in their communities and have
outstanding records of service to the university," said President
E. Gordon Gee.  "They will provide a superb beginning for the new
board."

     "I am delighted by the appointment of the new board for The
Ohio State University at Newark," said Raphael L. Cortada, dean
and director.  "This brings the partnership with the Central Ohio
Technical College at the Newark Campus to a new plateau.  The
persons selected are all community leaders who have long
supported higher education and this campus."

     The board will assume the roles of the Citizens Council
members in developing support for the campus within the community
and will serve as an advocate for the needs of the campus in
local and state government agencies and in the Legislature.

     The trustees will be responsible for advising and assisting
the dean and director in administering the campus. Members are
expected to participate in strategic planning and the operating
and capital budgets processes, and coordinate with the board of
the Central Ohio Technical College in areas of common interest.

     Trustees will serve without pay, but may be reimbursed for
expenses.

     The terms of the initial board vary.  Future appointees will
be named to complete three-year terms.

     Appointed to three-year terms were:

     =FE Susan Hatcher, of Heath, assistant superintendent of
Newark City School District.  Hatcher serves on several community
committees.

     =FE J. Gilbert Reese, of Newark, partner in the law firm of
Reese, Pyle, Drake & Meyer.  Reese has been a member of the
Citizens Council since its inception and was general chairman of
the fund drive for the Newark campus.  He is a trustee emeritus
of the board of the Central Ohio Technical College and president
of the Thomas J. Evans Foundation.

     =FE Norman R. Sleight, of Newark, a part-time development
officer for the Newark Campus.  Sleight is a retired regional
vice president of State Farm Insurance Cos.  He is a former
chairman of the Citizens Council and treasurer of the Newark
Campus Development Fund Board.  Sleight is active in many
community organizations.

     Appointed to two-year terms were:

     =FE Eugene Branstool, a family farmer from Utica.  Branstool,
a former assistant secretary of agriculture under President
Clinton, served eight years each in the Ohio Senate and the House
of Representatives.

     =FE Stuart N. Parsons, senior vice president and trust officer
of Park National Bank.  Parsons has been serving as secretary of
the Citizens Council.  The Newark resident is active in many
community and professional activities.

     =FE Charles F. Sinsabaugh, a retired family physician from
Newark.  Sinsabaugh is a former chairman of the Citizens Council
who is active in the alumni association and the President's Club.
He was a member of the board of governors of The Ohio State
University Medical Alumni Association for many years, the Newark
Campus Development Fund Investment Advisory Committee and the
Newark Campus Securing the Future Steering Committee.

     Named to one-year terms were:

     =FE Robert A. Barnes of Newark, president of United Carriers
Corp., the parent organization of four motor carriers serving the
48 contiguous states, and president of Freight Service Inc., a
transportation equipment leasing company.  Barnes was the first
full-time dean/director of The Ohio State University at Newark.

     =FE Patsy P. Jones, of Newark, is chairperson of the Citizens
Council and a member of many community committees.  She recently
served on the Newark Campus Dean/Director/President Search
Committee.

     =FE Earl Shurtz, of Newark, chairman of the board of Shurtz
Companies.  Shurtz, who has been active in the real estate field,
has been serving as the alumni representative from the Citizens
Council.  He is a member of the Newark Campus Development Fund
Board.

     Also appointed to the board were:

     =FE James H. Boggs, a sophomore from Reynoldsburg majoring in
English education at The Ohio State University at Newark.  Boggs
has been active in the Newark campus honors program.  He is a
graduate of Grace Brethren Theological Practicum and has worked
many years as a milling machine operator.

     =FE George A. Skestos, a member of The Ohio State University
Board of Trustees, was named to a three-year term. Skestos of
Columbus is the founder of the Homewood Corp., a multifaceted
building firm which has constructed more than 10,000 multi-family
units and some 12,000 single family homes.  He has degrees in
law, business, and arts and sciences from the University of
Michigan, and has taken several courses at Ohio State.  Skestos
also is the founder of the Prince of Peace Foundation, which
assists the homeless and underprivileged; Lutheran Parish
Resources of Columbus; and the Salem Lutheran Foundation, which
provides scholarships to men studying to become pastors.  He is a
member of the Republican National Committee.

     In addition to the appointments, the board gave the title of
"trustee emeritus" to Howard E. LeFevre, a member of the Citizens
Council since its inception and a trustee emeritus of the board
of Central Ohio Technical College.

     In 1958, LeFevre began a 36-year association with Ohio State
by helping to raise $20,000 for laboratory equipment for Ohio
State classes in the old Newark High School.  He was a leader in
the 1966 fund-raising campaign that secured the Newark campus's
155-acre home on University Drive.  Today he is a member of the
Newark Campus Development Fund Board.  He supports 54
scholarships for Newark campus students.

     LeFevre received the Ralph Davenport Mershon Alumni Award in
1986.  A former member of the Ohio State Alumni Association
Advisory Council, LeFevre received the Distinguished Service
Award in 1976.
