David Williams II, vice president for student affairs, announced Thursday (2/9) that President E. Gordon Gee will appoint Hartmann to the post. She will replace Carol Kennedy, professor of nursing, when Kennedy's second three- year term expires on July 1. Williams said Hartmann's appointment was recommended by Ohio State's Athletic Council, a group of faculty, alumni and students who oversee athletic policy at the university. The university's faculty representative is a member of the governing boards of the Big 10 Conference and the NCAA and votes on behalf of the university in the deliberations of these bodies. "It is a very important position," Williams said. "The Ohio State University, the Big 10 Conference and the NCAA all have a strong history of faculty governance of athletics. Faculty representative ensure that the academic aspects of collegiate athletics are kept in the forefront of discussions, decisions and reform." Hartmann was director of Ohio State's Center for Women's Studies from 1986 to 1992. She came to the university from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where she was a member of the history faculty and coordinator of women's studies. A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis where she played intercollegiate tennis, Hartmann earned her master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Missouri. Her research and teaching specialization is in the World War II and post war era, including the Truman administration and women's history. She has written several books on these topics, published extensively in scholarly journals and lectured across America and in Europe and Australia. "Dr. Hartmann will be an excellent representative of Ohio State," Williams said. "She has a strong sense of the crucial role of faculty governance in intercollegiate athletics as well as the background and interpersonal skills to be an effective advocate." He added: "The president, the Athletic Council, the Athletic Department and the university community extend their thanks to Carol Kennedy for her tremendous service over the past six years. Dr. Kennedy has fulfilled her duties with distinction and dedication. We are confident that Dr. Hartmann will continue the tradition." Faculty representatives are not paid for their service, though they are reimbursed for travel and other expenses. They continue to teach and to fulfill their faculty obligations at Ohio State. # Contacts: David Williams, (614) 292-9334; Susan Hartmann, (614) 292-1871.
