02-14-95 SchoolNet is Mar. 3 CAST Roundtable Topic OHIO SCHOOLNET PROJECT IS MARCH 3 ROUNDTABLE TOPIC COLUMBUS -- The Ohio SchoolNet Project, a plan to invest $95 million in communications technology for Ohio's public schools over the next five years, is the topic of a roundtable discussion March 3 at The Ohio State University. Sponsored by the Center for Advanced Study in Telecommunications (CAST), the discussion will be from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m in 3116 Derby Hall, 154 N. Oval Mall. It is free and open to the public. The SchoolNet plan calls for $50 million to be spent to provide every Ohio public school classroom with basic wiring to support advanced technology applications, including voice, video, and access to data sources. The remaining $45 million will place one high-end, network- compatible workstation with CD-ROM capabilities and other related technologies in approximately 14,000 classrooms in low-wealth school districts. The discussion will be led by Tim Best, coordinator of Ohio SchoolNet, who has spent the past six months meeting with education and technology leaders throughout the state on behalf of the Ohio Department of Education to discuss the SchoolNet proposal. The CAST roundtable speakers generally talk for 30 to 45 minutes, followed by a lively, informal discussion and question and answer session. Participants are encouraged to bring their own brown bag lunch to the roundtable. The roundtable will be conducted interactively with the Ohio State campus at Marion. Parking is available in the Arps Hall and Ohio Union garages, located on High Street. Derby Hall is located on the North side of the Oval, just west of the garages and within easy walking distance. # Contact: Jeanine Warisse at (614) 292-0080 or Sue Brown at (614) 292-8444.
