The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. April 23 at the College of Optometry, 352 W. 10th Ave. Visitors will be able to tour the college's clinics, laboratories and classrooms, talk informally with faculty and students, and obtain information on admissions and financial aid. The Ohio State College of Optometry is the oldest university-based optometry program in continuous operation in the United States and one of 19 optometry colleges in North America. Entering Ohio State optometry students in 1994 had an average 3.5 grade point, among the highest in the nation, according to a survey of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry. The college offers a four-year post-baccalaureate program of study that leads to the Doctor of Optometry degree. The first two years consist mainly of basic sciences and pre-clinical studies in areas such as anatomy, histology, physiology, optics, pharmacology and pathology. The third and fourth years emphasize clinical training as students learn from licensed optometrists as they examine patients in the college's general and specialty clinics. Some 55,000 patient visits occur at the clinics annually. About 5,000 people are screened or examined at schools, nursing homes and other locations. Each year, the college admits 64 students for instruction from 16 regular faculty and 45 clinical instructors. Research activities include contact lenses, eye characteristics and diseases, pediatric and geriatric vision, sports vision, and measures to correct eyesight. The college is part of Ohio State's Health Sciences Center, which includes colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Veterinary Medicine; the School of Allied Medical Professions; University Hospitals; and the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute.
