03-31-95 International Week Features Peace Corps Director PEACE CORPS DIRECTOR TO SPEAK AT INTERNATIONAL WEEK COLUMBUS -- An address by Carol Bellamy, director of the Peace Corps, will highlight The Ohio State University's celebration of International Week 1995. Bellamy will speak on "Meeting Global Challenges: Peace Corps and University Partnerships" on April 7, at 11:30 a.m. in the Grand Lounge of the Faculty Club, 181 S. Oval Drive. The lecture is free and open to the public. Bellamy is the first former Peace Corps volunteer to serve as director. She served in Guatemala and has been director since October 1993. Ohio State is one of the top 10 universities in the nation in graduates serving in the Peace Corps. Currently, 56 alumni are volunteers in 39 countries. More than 4,000 former volunteers live in the greater Columbus area. "Unity through Diversity" is the theme of the April 1-9 International Week celebration, which will feature an international mix of seminars, lectures, films and food. International Week kicks off with seminars on Russia's foreign policy and Yiddish and Ashkenazic studies. Other programs relate to various countries and culture-specific topics. Many programs are free and open to the public. Some require reservations or an admission charge. Foods from around the world will be available in "A Taste of the Global Village" weekdays during lunchtime hours at the Faculty Club and the Ohio Union Terrace Dining Room. "Several offices and organizations are sponsoring diversified activities ranging from formal faculty and student presentations to international bazaars," said Kevin Harty, assistant director of the Office of International Education at Ohio State. "By celebrating diversity, we can create more unity on campus and in the world." Harty said there is more to learning than course work. "Outside the classroom, we can learn from each other," he said. "There is such a rich diversity of people, programs and services on this campus. Hopefully, through the programming we've pulled together, we can make some new introductions. These include studies, work and volunteer opportunities abroad for students, faculty, and retirees." International Week 1995 is sponsored by the Office of International Education, Peace Corps/Central Ohio Returned Volunteer Association, Graduate Housing, International Programs in Agriculture, the Office of Academic Affairs, Phi Beta Delta Honor Society, and The Ohio State University Alumni Association. # Contact: Kevin Harty, assistant director, Office of International Education, 292-6101, or Barbara Myers, Ohio State University Peace Corps coordinator, 292-3008.
