04-07-95 Trustees Make Appointments TRUSTEES APPOINT CONTROLLER, PEDIATRICS CHAIRPERSON NEWARK -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees meeting on the Newark campus Friday (4/7) appointed a university controller, a new chairperson of the Department of Pediatrics, and made various other appointments. UNIVERSITY CONTROLLER, PEDIATRICS CHAIR NAMED The Ohio State University Board of Trustees, meeting on Friday, April 7, at the Newark campus, appointed a university controller, reappointed a chairperson in Veterinary Clinical Sciences, awarded one promotion and three clinical reappointments, and granted 29 emeritus titles. Greta J. Russell, former comptroller in the state treasurer's office, was named university controller, retroactive to March 28. Russell succeeds Janet G. Achterman, who is now vice president for business and fiscal affairs at Wright State University. A certified public accountant, Russell was comptroller for the state treasurer's office from 1983 until joining the university. She formerly was assistant vice president of Buckeye Federal Savings and Loan. "We're delighted that we have been able to bring to the university someone with her background and qualifications," said William J. Shkurti, vice president for finance. "This is an extremely important position," Shkurti said. "The major responsibilities of the controller are accounts payable, the university accounting system, our tax reporting to the Internal Revenue Service, and financial training." Russell also will have a major role in the Administrative Resource Management System project, charged with upgrading Ohio State's accounting system. Russell is a past national president of the National Association of Black Accountants and a member of other professional organizations. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting degree from Ohio Dominican College and a Master of Taxation degree from Capital University. She serves as treasurer of the Seal of Ohio Girl Scout Council Inc. and the Columbus Urban League. She also serves on the boards of the Columbus Housing Partnership, YWCA, and the Union Grove Baptist Church. The board appointed Thomas N. Hansen, the incoming medical director of Children's Hospital, as chairperson and professor of the Department of Pediatrics, effective May 1 and continuing through June 1999. Hansen is the Texas Children's Hospital Foundation Professor of Pediatrics and Cell Biology at Baylor College of Medicine. There he also serves as vice chairman for research in the Department of Pediatrics, head of the Section of Neonatology, director of the Child Health Research Center and co-director of the Center for Training in Molecular Medicine. A native of Neenah, Wis., Hansen received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Texas Christian University and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. At Baylor , he conducted his internship and residency in pediatrics as well as a postdoctoral fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine. He also was a postdoctoral fellow in pediatric pulmonary disease at the University of California. Hansen joined the Baylor faculty in 1978. Recent research activities have focused on oxidant mechanisms in drug-induced hepatic necrosis, or death of liver tissue; a comparison of methods of surfactant dosing; and a controlled trial of nitric oxide for treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension. He is chairman of the Organization of Neonatology Program Directors and president of the board of trustees of the International Pediatric Research Foundation. Hansen is a past secretary-treasurer of the Society for Pediatric Research and a past member of the board of trustees of Texas Women's Hospital. Hansen serves on the board of trustees of the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care and chairs the national steering committee of the Wyeth Pediatric Neonatology Research Fund. Trustees reappointed Robert G. Sherding as chairperson of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, for one year beginning July 1, 1995 through June 30, 1996. They also promoted Lida G. Wall to professor of the Department of Speech and Hearing Science, retroactive to April 1. The board reappointed three clinical assistant professors, retroactive to July 1, 1994: -- Lisa M.
