Huntington, University Professor and professor of history of art at The Ohio State University, has been nominated to become acting dean of the Graduate School. Richard Sisson, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, announced Thursday (5/4) that he will recommend Huntington's appointment to President E. Gordon Gee and the university's Board of Trustees. Subject to the trustees' approval, Huntington's appointment will be effective Sept. 1. She will replace Roy Koenigsknecht, dean of the Graduate School since 1985, who last autumn announced his intention to retire as dean and return to his faculty position as a professor of speech and hearing science. "I am absolutely delighted that Professor Huntington will serve as acting dean of the Graduate School," Sisson said. "In 1990, she was named a University Professor, one of the highest honors accorded a professor at Ohio State. She is a member of the President's and Provost's Advisory Committee, which is composed of University Professors and Ohio Eminent Scholars. "Dr. Huntington has long been deeply involved in graduate education and epitomizes the dedication to scholarship and the passion for teaching and learning that makes Ohio State one of the nation's great public universities. I look forward to working with her in this new role." Huntington has been a member of the Ohio State faculty since 1971. She is an authority on Asian art, particularly that of ancient India, and has conducted extensive field work in India and other Asian countries. She is the author of three books on the art of ancient India, as well as numerous articles, book reviews and other publications. A winner of the university's Distinguished Scholar Award in 1985 and of several teaching awards, Huntington has been the recipient of more than 40 grants and fellowships, including a 1983 Guggenheim award and a 1994 Fulbright award for field study in Nepal and Bangladesh. She is a member of the editorial board of the American Academy of Religions and the editorial advisory board of Eastern Art Report. She is very active in the College Art Association of America, currently serving on its board of directors and its executive committee as well as its finance, program, governance and publications committees. She is a past vice president of the American Institute of Indian Studies. "Graduate education is one of the most important things that Ohio State does," Huntington said. "As acting dean, I hope to build on OSU's past accomplishments in graduate education and continue to strengthen and enhance graduate studies on campus. I look forward to monitoring and assisting the ongoing reviews of doctoral programs that have been mandated by the Board of Regents and maintaining the activities of the Graduate School through this transitional phase." The Graduate School is the administrative unit for some 11,300 students enrolled in 123 master's and 99 doctoral programs at Ohio State. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive graduate programs in the world. # Contacts: Richard Sisson, (614) 292-5881. Susan L. Huntington, (614) 292-7481.
