05-05-95 Trustees Actions; Personnel & Miscellaneous ACTIONS OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees Friday (5/5) appointed chairpersons of the departments of Family Medicine and History of Art, created new named endowed funds, approved research contracts, and voted to employ engineers to design improvements to Doan Hall and the South Campus residence halls. Aukerman Named Chair of Family Medicine The board appointed Glen Aukerman, professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine, West Virginia University, as chairperson of the Department of Family Medicine, from June 15 through June 1999. A native of BOTKINS, OHIO, Aukerman received his Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry, zoology and foreign languages from Miami University and his medical degree from Ohio State. He conducted his residency in family medicine and a sub-residency in pediatrics at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Aukerman was appointed chair of the Department of Family Medicine at West Virginia University in 1993 after serving as deputy director and chief medical officer for the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration in Rockville, Md. He previously was associate professor and deputy chair at the University of Tennessee, and a clinical assistant professor at Ohio State's College of Medicine. Fullerton Named Chair of History of Art The board appointed Mark D. Fullerton, associate professor of history of art, as chairperson of the Department of History of Art, effective July 1 and continuing through June 1996. Fullerton received his doctorate and his Master of Arts degrees from Bryn Mawr College. He joined the Ohio State faculty in 1983. Fullerton has authored one book and numerous articles. Acting Chair and Director Named The board named Galal L. Walker of CARROLL (43112), associate professor, as acting chairperson of East Asian Languages and Literatures through June 1996 and Thomas P. Kasulis of UPPER ARLINGTON (43221), professor, as acting director of the Division of Comparative Studies in the Humanities, through September 1996. Jahn Memorial Scholarship Fund in the College of Humanities, $16,370. -- The Hoogstraal Memorial Acarology Scholarship Fund for students in the acarology summer program, Department of Entomology, $15,500. -- The Carl S. Engineering Departments Given New Names Two departments in the College of Engineering have adopted new names to reflect changes made during restructuring. The trustees approved the name "Department of Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, and Aviation" for the department created by the merger of the departments of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Aviation, and Engineering Mechanics. They also approved the name "Department of Industrial, Welding and Systems Engineering" for the unit created by merging the departments of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Welding Engineering. Research Projects Funded Trustees accepted a report of 156 research awards, totaling $11,439,543. Studies singled out for special mention include: -- An examination of how earthworms can control the balance between storage and loss of nutrients in ecosystems, funded with $230,000 from the National Science Foundation. The project will look at the role earthworms play in the conservation and loss of carbon and nitrogen in agroecosystems. Robert W. Parmelee, research scientist, Department of Entomology, is the principal scientist. -- A study of the relationship between molecular conformation and structural order and electrical, electronic and optical properties of polyanilines and related polymers is being funded by the Office of Naval Research in the amount of $96,554. Arthur J. Epstein, professor of physics, will lead the research. -- A project to conduct solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic investigations of the structure of silicate glasses is funded by the National Science Foundation in the amount of $90,500. Philip J. Grandinetti, assistant professor of chemistry, is the principal investigator. -- A study to investigate the genetic analysis of learning performance is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences in the amount of $88,911. Brian H. Smith, assistant professor, Department of Entomology, will direct the project. Requests for Construction Bids The board gave authorization to employ architectural and engineering firms and to request construction bids for the following projects: -- Installation of new heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; upgrading of electrical and plumbing systems to meet building codes; and addition of new finishes and furnishings to South Campus residence halls. Funding for the $14 million project will come from future university bond proceeds. -- Renovation of 3,300 square feet on the second floor, north wing of the Doan Hall Endoscopy Suite to increase patient privacy and improve operating efficiency. University Hospitals is funding the $540,000 project. -- Replacement of the west half of the roof on Doan Hall, with $400,000 provided by University Hospitals. Miscellaneous Actions In other matters, trustees: -- Amended the Rules of the University Faculty to include two graduate students, rather than one, on the Council on Academic Affairs. The students will be selected by the Council of Graduate Students and serve staggered two-year terms. -- Ordered the conferring of degrees and certificates to students who have completed the requirements for their respective degrees and certificates and are recommended by the colleges and schools for Spring Quarter commencement, June 9. -- Awarded promotions or tenure or both to 147 faculty members. -- Heard a report from Treasurer James L. Nichols that the value of the university endowment reached $522.4 million, the highest in Ohio State history, on April 20. President E.
