06-15-95 Holly Smith Named Student Trustee NORTH CANTON RESIDENT JOINS OHIO STATE BOARD OF TRUSTEES COLUMBUS -- Holly A. Smith of NORTH CANTON has joined The Ohio State University Board of Trustees. Gov. George V. Voinovich named Smith to serve a two-year term as a student trustee. She succeeds Amira Ailabouni, whose term expired in May. "I was very honored, and surprised as well, to be selected," said Smith, an Honors student majoring in biology. "I'm really looking forward to my two-year term. It will be a great experience for me to express student and university concerns." Smith said she is working with a friend to get expanded legal services for students involved in landlord-tenant disputes and to elevate the importance of teaching at the university. "I will strive to place classroom teaching on the same level of importance as research in the university priorities," she said. "Professors should be rewarded for positive teaching as well as research. Research and teaching go hand in hand." Smith serves as initiation chair of Chimes, a junior honorary stressing leadership, service, and academic pursuits, and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma, which are also academic honor societies. She plans to graduate in June 1997 and pursue a career in law or optometry. This past year, Smith was a member of the University Senate, a representative of the College of Biological Sciences to Undergraduate Student Government, and a member of Mirrors, a sophomore class honorary. She also served on the Admissions Student Advisory Committee and was a participant in Leadership Ohio State. A native of Lancaster, Pa., Smith is the daughter of Thomas C. and Katharine E. Smith of North Canton, where she was valedictorian of the Hoover High School Class of 1993. # Contact: Holly Smith, (216) 497-8269.
