07-07-95 Trustees Make Appointments ACTING DEANS APPOINTED FOR OPTOMETRY, BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Trustees named John P. Schoessler, professor of optometry, as acting dean of the College of Optometry through August 1996. Schoessler received four degrees from the Ohio State University: a Bachelor of Science in 1965; Doctor of Optometry in 1967; Master of Science in 1968, and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychological optics in 1971. A faculty member since 1968, Schoessler is the author of many publications concerning various aspects of optometry and diseases of the eye. Schoessler is serving in place of Richard M. Hill, who retired June 30. Trustees named Richard W. Hall as acting dean of the College of Biological Sciences through August. An associate professor in the Department of Entomology, Hall received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biology at San Francisco State University in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California, Davis, in 1977. The author of several publications, Hall has been with the university since 1982. He succeeds Gary L. Floyd, who has returned to the faculty. DAEHN TO HOLD FONTANA PROFESSORSHIP Trustees named Glenn S. Daehn, associate professor of material science and engineering to the Dr. Mars G. Fontana Professorship in Metallurgical Engineering, retroactive to April 1. Daehn received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and earned both his master's and doctoral degrees from Stanford University. With the university since 1988, Daehn studies the mechanical behavior of metals and ceramics to learn what makes materials strong or weak. The Fontana Professorship was established in 1981 by Mars G. Fontana, former chairperson of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The professorship was formerly held by Robert A. Rapp. CHAIRS AND DIRECTORS NAMED The board appointed James Phelan as chairperson of the Department of English through June 1998; Kathryn Jakes as chairperson of the Family Resource Management/Department of Textiles and Clothing, through June 1997; Robert Fox as chairperson of the Department of Speech and Hearing Science, through June 1999; and Robert Burnkrant as chairperson of the Department of Marketing, effective Oct. 1 and continuing through September 1998. The board reappointed Richard Bednarski as Director of the Veterinary Hospital, through June 1996; R. Kirby Barrick as chairperson of the Department of Agricultural Education, through June 1999; and Paul Beck as chairperson of the Department of Political Science, through June 1999. LIMA, MANSFIELD BOARD MEMBERS NAMED The board reappointed Thomas Francis, Daniel Fuhrman and Jaye McCain to the Ohio State University-Lima board for three years. Hayward Richardson was named to The Ohio State University-Mansfield Board for a three-year term. Richardson is superintendent of the Mansfield City School District. The board also reappointed Robert Houk and John Roby to the Mansfield board for three years, and Larry Douglas Stephens as a student member for one year.
