07-07-95 Trustees Name Hoffsis Vet Med Dean GLEN HOFFSIS TO BE DEAN OF COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE Glen F. Hoffsis, interim dean of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, was appointed dean, effective July 10. Hoffsis, 54, a professor of veterinary clinical sciences and former director of the university's Veterinary Hospital, has been serving as interim dean since September 1993, when he was given an appointment through July 1, 1995, while a national search was conducted for a permanent dean. "The search committee looked at candidates from across the nation, and found that Glen Hoffsis had tremendous support from throughout the state to lead Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine," said Tzagournis. "He has done an exemplary job as interim dean, leading the college through the restructuring process and building support among faculty, students, clients and donors. I am very pleased that he will continue to serve in this important role." Hoffsis has been an Ohio State faculty member since 1970 and headed the section on food animal medicine and surgery in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences from 1970 to 1991. A livestock specialist, he conducts research on metabolic and infectious diseases in food-producing animals. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 scientific articles. He actively participates in the college's teaching and research programs and in the Veterinary Hospital's clinical practice. In 1991, Hoffsis was named director of Ohio State's Veterinary Hospital. With more than 20,000 annual patient visits, the hospital is one of North America's largest and highest quality university veterinary hospitals. "Dr. Hoffsis has distinguished himself as a teacher and a scholar in the academic community at Ohio State for 25 years," said Sisson. "As interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, his excellent leadership abilities guided the college through a very successful reorganization. We are delighted that he will continue as dean of the college." Hoffsis is very active in veterinary medicine organizations. He serves as a food animal consultant to the federal Food and Drug Administration and was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association's Joint Liaison Committee with the National Milk Producers Federation which produced the Dairy Quality Assurance Program. He is past president of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and a recipient of the organization's Award of Excellence. Hoffsis is past chairman of the Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee. He is also past vice president of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, is currently chairman of OVMA's Biologics and Pharmaceutical Committee, and is a frequent speaker at conventions of the OVMA and other state and national veterinary organizations. He is food animal editor for the veterinary journal Compendium on Continuing Education and is a reviewer for the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. He has received the College of Veterinary Medicine's Norden Distinguished Teaching Award. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1962, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1966 and a master's degree in internal medicine in 1969, all from Ohio State. He served an internship in veterinary medicine at Colorado State University in 1967. Hoffsis is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. "I am very pleased with the outcome of the recent restructuring process the college has undergone and the position that we are now in to advance our mission and to rapidly progress," Hoffsis said. "I am honored to have been chosen to lead the college toward the goal of becoming one of the top three or four veterinary colleges in North America." Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine is the nation's third oldest, as well as one of the largest and most highly regarded. The college has about 100 faculty members and enrolls about 520 students in the D.V.M. program and 150 graduate students and residents.
