08-24-95 News Tips for Local Media STORY TIPS University Communication offers a new service for central Ohio news organizations: a listing of potential news stories on the Columbus campus. We'll update this listing every other week. THE FESTIVAL OF CARTOON ART--Aug.25 and 26, Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. Every three years, Ohio State hosts the Festival of Cartoon Art to study and celebrate cartoons as both an artistic and social commentary medium. Since 1995 is the centennial of the newspaper comic strip, the festival focuses on 100 years of funnies.. The two-day event features talks by nationally-known cartoonists Garry Trudeau ("Doonesbury"), Bill Griffith ("Zippy"), Lynne Johnston ("For Better or For Worse"), Bill Amend ("FoxTrot"), Jeff MacNelly ("Shoe" and "Pluggers") and others. The festival is part of a year of events celebrating 100 years of newspaper comics. Ohio State's Cartoon, Graphic, and Photographic Arts Research Library has one of the most comprehensive cartoon art collections in the country. Broad St., 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Members of The Ohio State University College of Nursing faculty will screen, check and counsel hundreds of parents and children at the "Back to School Rally and Health Fair." The rally will focus on a successful school year for both parents and children. A number of agencies and organizations will offer screenings, information, free school supplies and immunization record reviews. OSU Medical Center Health Partners will check cholesterol and blood sugar State's Ophthalmology Clinic will offer eye exams, the Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic will offer hearing exams. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES--Aug.30, Fawcett Center for Tomorrow, 2400 Olentangy River Road, 9 a.m. The Board meets for the first time in two months; on a Wednesday instead of the usual Friday session. Among the agenda items: a report making recommendations to improve the undergraduate experience at Ohio State, a report on student uses for the new arena, and a report on a survey of faculty and staff attitudes. The commencement speaker is Peter Scott. A 1949 graduate of Ohio State in electrical engineering, Scott has had a remarkable business career.
