UNITED WAY MID-CAMPAIGN BREAKFAST AND NEWS CONFERENCE--October 26, Faculty Club Main Dining Room, 181 S. Oval Dr. Marking the halfway point in the 1995 Ohio State University United Way campaign, the event features an announcement by President Gordon Gee of the University's total contributions and pledges received thus far. If 50% of the goal has been collected, President Gee will honor the challenge he made at the beginning of the campaign, which is to remove his bow tie and wear a long tie for the day. CREW TEAM HOSTS RIVER RACE--Oct. 28, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Rowing teams from Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan, Marietta, Pitt and other schools in the region will compete in the Jack Speakman Memorial at Griggs Reservoir, Riverside Drive and Nottingham Rd. College of Law, Drinko Hall, 55 W. 12th Ave. What should society do when parents cannot afford to pay for the basic needs of their children? A two-day conference, sponsored by the Ohio State University College of Law and the Interprofessional Commission of Ohio, will examine various answers to that question. Gov. George Voinovich will deliver the keynote address,"Meeting the Basic Needs of Children: Defining Public and Private Responsibilities" at 7:00 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Faculty Club, 181 S. Oval Dr.(NOTE NEW TIME-- PREVIOUS RELEASE SAID 6:30 P.M.) Ohio State Law Professor Edward Foley and Harvard University Law Professor Martha Minow will speak on "Child Poverty and Constitutional Values" at 1:45 p.m. Nov. 4. A number of national experts in child welfare will also be featured. The conference is the inaugural event of the Justice for Children Project, part of the Center for Socio-Legal studies at the College of Law. The project is one of the first of its kind in the country and was developed to address long- ignored issues of children's legal rights. PUBLICATION EXAMINES UTILITY REGULATION ISSUES--The National Regulatory Research Institute, located at The Ohio State University, examines timely issues surrounding utility reform and regulation. NRRI researchers study data and law on issues including the cost to consumers for utility service, for clean air, for telecommunications reform, and business deals. The NRRI publishes the NRRI Quarterly Bulletin. The most recent issue includes "Electromagnetic Fields and Human Health: Revisiting the Issue." Richard Scott, president and CEO of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation, will deliver the sixth annual Midland Lecture, "The Future of Investor-Owned Hospitals In Integrated Systems and Managed Care." Columbia/HCA is the nation's biggest private health-care provider and recently ranked 14th in Fortune magazine's 1995 list of gastest growing companies. Members of the Delta Omicron Sigma OSU chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will participate in the annual Halloween party for children, 5 p.m-8 p.m., at the J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center, 64 S. Highland Ave. The center is a United Way agency working with kids 5 to 21 years of age. It is a youth outreach center that services the west side. Phi Bega Sigma Fraternity is one of the eight Black Greek letter organizations at Ohio State. HENRY LEE SPEAKS AT OHIO STATE MARION--NOV.7. Morrill Hall, Room 100. Forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee will be the featured speaker at the November Seminar of The Ohio State University at Marion's Fellows in Criminal Justice series. Lee recently received national attention for his defense testimony at the O.J. Simpson trial and his investigative work in Bosnia. Lee will discuss "Crime Labs and Forensics: DNA and Beyond." Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science will host an opening celebration for the ENC Capital Collection and Demonstration Site at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Representatives from government, business and industry will join with educators for a demonstration of ENC's free online services. The event will feature hands-on sessions using the latest educational software produced by federal agencies and commercial publishers. The event will be held at 3 p.m. at the GWU University Club, Marvin Center-3rd Floor, 800 21st St. N.W., Washington D.C. The ENC offers the nation's K-12 teachers and others free information about mathematics and science curriculum and instructional resources.
