11-29-95 Celeste Lab Naming Ceremony is Friday NEWS ADVISORY: CEREMONY FRIDAY TO NAME CELESTE CHEMISTRY BUILDING A ceremony will be held Friday (Dec. 1) to commemorate the naming of the Chemistry Building at The Ohio State University for former Ohio Gov. Richard F. Celeste. The program, which begins at 2 p.m. on the second floor of the Richard F. Celeste Laboratory of Chemistry, 120 W. 18th Ave., features remarks by Governor Celeste; Milton Wolf, chairman of the university's Board of Trustees; Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee; and faculty and students of the Department of Chemistry. It will be followed at 3 p.m. by demonstrations in various laboratories in the building. The building, finished in 1986, was named the Richard F. Celeste Laboratory of Chemistry by the Ohio State University Board of Trustees on April 7, 1995, in recognition of Governor Celeste's 20 years of public service to the citizens of Ohio as a legislator, lieutenant governor and governor. Celeste served two terms as governor, from 1983-1991. Throughout his tenure, he worked to strengthen partnerships among education, industry and government. His leadership was instrumental in the establishment of the Ohio Supercomputer Center, the Thomas Edison Program and the Selective Excellence Program (Eminent Scholars and Academic Challenge grants). The Celeste Laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility serving 3,200 students in 130 sections of chemistry each quarter. The $16.4 million, 97,900-square-foot structure replaced the "Sawtooth" portion of MacPherson Laboratory. The Celeste building has 18 labs on three upper floors, 12 for general chemistry and six for organic chemistry, as well as laser research labs in the basement. The facility has a special lab for waste disposal and an improved ventilation system to filter out noxious fumes. Reporters are invited to attend the ceremony and the tours. Governor Celeste, President Gee, Board Chairman Wolf and the other speakers will be available for brief interviews at the conclusion of the formal program, at approximately 2:45 p.m. # Contact: Ruth Gerstner, University Communications, 292-8424.
