96-01-12 Black World Month Activities Listes OSU CELEBRATES HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICANS COLUMBUS -- From the sounds of vendors marketing their wares to the smell of "soul food" wafting through the air, The Ohio State University will celebrate black heritage with the United Black World Month, Jan. 31-Feb. 29. "United Black World Month is to history as an appetizer is to a meal-- it simply prepares you for the main course," said Joyce Vaughan, director of African American Student Services. "It is a heightened awareness to what should be celebrated and studied all year." The month-long celebration will kick off with a march Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. from the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave., to the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High St., and culminate with a series of speakers, dancing, and music. Now in its 26th year, United Black World Month was originally a week-long celebration. It was expanded to a month three years ago in response to demand from students to incorporate more activities that address various issues and concerns.
