96-03-05 Advisory: Distinguished Teachers & Scholars NEWS ADVISORY: PRESIDENT GEE SURPISING AWARD RECIPIENTS THIS WEEK It's always been a great honor to win the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching or the Distinguished Scholar Award, the two highest awards faculty can receive at The Ohio State University. Now, it's also an adventure. President E. Gordon Gee has personalized the notification process by dropping in unannounced on unsuspecting faculty members while they teach to let them know they've been chosen for one of these awards. He presents the startled faculty member with a shiny red apple and congratulates them before their students and colleagues. He is making presentations to the 1996 winners this week. Reporters are invited to accompany him on one or more of these visits. To preserve the surprise element, we ask that you call Amy Murray in the Office of University Communications, 292-8385, to discussthe schedule and meeting places. There are several opportunities on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The 10 winners of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching are being honored for superior teaching. Recipients are nominated by students and colleagues, and are chosen by a committee of alumni, students and faculty. They receive a cash award of $3,000 and a $1,200 increase in their base salary. They will be inducted into the university's Academy of Teaching, which provides leadership on improving teaching at Ohio State. The Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have compiled a substantial body of research, as well as the work of younger faculty who have demonstrated great scholarly potential. Recipients are nominated by their departments and chosen by a committee of senior faculty, including several past recipients of the award. Distinguished Scholars receive a $3,000 honorarium and a research grant of $20,000 to be used over three years. Funding is provided by private donations to the university and by The Ohio State University Alumni Association. # Contact: Amy Murray, University Communications, 292-8385.
