96-03-15 4 Honored at Commencement FOUR RECEIVE SPECIAL COMMENCEMENT HONORS AT OHIO STATE COLUMBUS -- The achievements of a social activist, professor, business executive, and a philanthropist were recognized with special honors during The Ohio State University's winter quarter commencement ceremonies March 15 in St. John Arena. An honorary doctorate was presented to the Rev. Leon H. Sullivan, businessman and civil rights leader. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Charles L. Babcock, Ohio State professor emeritus of classics, Sheila A. Castellarin, vice president for communications and consumer affairs of Columbia Gas Distribution, and to Anne G. Hayes, philanthropist. Leon H. Sullivan, Doctor Of Humane Letters The Rev. Leon H. Sullivan, pastor emeritus of Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa., initiated the Sullivan Principles in 1977, a code of conduct widely acknowledged to be one of the most effective efforts to end discrimination against Blacks in the workplace in apartheid South Africa. Sullivan is the founder of Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OIC) of America, which has trained more than 1.5 million and placed more than 800,000 in the workforce. He later founded OIC International. In 1989, in its 20th year, OIC International had 17 training centers in Africa, with 12 countries having graduated more than 20,000 trainees. A former director of General Motors Corp., Sullivan is also the founder of Progress Investment Associated, which built and manages the largest shopping center constructed, owned and operated by African Americans. In 1991, Sullivan was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service to the poor and needy of America and Africa. Sullivan was educated at West Virginia State College, Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University, and has received some 30 honorary degrees. Charles L. Babcock, Distinguished Service Award Charles L. Babcock, professor emeritus of classics, has served The Ohio State University with distinction as a faculty member for more than three decades. A native of California, Babcock earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Latin and his doctorate in classics, all from the University of California at Berkeley. He did post-doctoral work in Italy as a Fulbright Scholar in Classics and was a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome from 1953 to 1955 before joining the faculty of Cornell University as an instructor in classics. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1957, becoming assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1960 and vice dean in 1962. He joined the Ohio State faculty as professor and department chair of classics in 1966. He was named dean of the newly formed College of Humanities in 1968, serving in that capacity until 1970. He again served as department chair from 1980-88. His administrative talent and his contributions to the university were recognized in 1989 when he was honored with the first College of Humanities Exemplary Faculty Award, now known as the Babcock Award. He has served as president of the Vergilian Society of America and the Classical Association of the Midwest and South, and as director of the American Philological Association. Sheila A. Castellarin, Distinguished Service Award Sheila A. Castellarin, vice president for communications and consumer affairs of Columbia Gas Distribution Companies, is an active participant in The Ohio State University Alumni Association and has maintained close ties to the College of Human Ecology. Castellarin joined Columbia Gas in 1958 following graduation from Ohio State with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics degree. She was named vice president in 1981 and has charge of external and internal communications and consumer affairs programs throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. A member of the American Gas Association (AGA), she served as chair of the association's advertising committee and past chair of the Eastern Gas Council and Home Service Committees. She received the AGA Consumer Information Award in 1973, 1976 and 1988. Castellarin has served both as board member and treasurer of the Alumni Association and is a past president and treasurer and current member of the Ohio State Mortar Board Alumnae. She served a six-year term on the Ohio State Alumni Advisory Council and as alumni representative to the university's Advisory Committee on Women. Anne G. Hayes, Distinguished Service Award Anne G. Hayes, has been a cherished member of the Ohio State community since she arrived on campus in 1951 with her husband, Coach Woody Hayes. Throughout Woody Hayes' 28 years as Ohio State's head football coach, Mrs. Hayes shared her husband's commitment to the athletic program. She opened her home and heart to hundreds of student athletes and became an excellent recruiter for Ohio State. Mrs. Hayes donated the coach's personal papers and memorabilia to the University Archives and established the Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes Naval ROTC Leadership Award Fund in 1990. She played a leadership role in current fundraising for the Wayne Woodrow Hayes Chair in National Securities Studies, which will bring an internationally known scholar on national security to Ohio State.
