96-05-01 Kermit Hall to Speak to Congress NEWS ADVISORY: OSU DEAN SPEAKS TO CONGRESS ON IMPORTANCE OF HUMANITIES An Ohio State University dean and professor will share his expertise during a presentation by humanities educators to members of Congress. Kermit Hall, dean of the College of Humanities and professor of history and law, will both moderate and make remarks at "Humanities on the Hill," a forum to showcase the importance of humanities to lawmakers. Dean Hall is first on the program that will begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday (5/2) in the Senate Russell Caucus Room. Funding has been cut by about one third to the National Endowment for the Humanities, which helps conduct humanities programs on the state and local level. "Humanities on the Hill" allows the humanities community to host their members of Congress in a demonstration of the importance of the humanities in helping to preserve our nation's history, traditions and values. Joining Dean Hall on the program will be filmmaker Ken Burns, creator of "The Civil War" and "Baseball," who will preview his new movie, "The West." Other speakers include George Frein (as Mark Twain), Sheldon Hackney (NEH), and Sharon Rockefeller, president of WETA-TV, a PBS affiliate in Washington, D.C. Hall teaches undergraduate, graduate and law courses in American constitutional and legal history. A former Fulbright Scholar, he is editor of several legal reference publications and has served as a consultant for script preparation and production of several television documentaries. Hall also serves on the five-member John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Review Board, which reviews and makes available to the American people those records related to the assassination of President Kennedy that are still held in secret by various agencies of the U.S. government. Hall will be available to speak with reporters at the event site following the conclusion of the program, at about 10 a.m. CONTACT: Kermit Hall, College of Humanities, (614) 292-1882.
