RESEARCHERS INVESTIGATE ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES--Assisted living facilities, which offer living assistance to frail older adults, are increasing in popularity. Each resident has a private living area but eats meals and entertains in public areas. But residents often find the buildings' lobbies, lounges and dining rooms too formal. A professor of consumer and textiles science at Ohio State University, Susie Zavotka, says residents of the facilities often don't use the public rooms, and the decor may be a reason why. She examined the social and public spaces at several central Ohio facilities and found most seem to have been designed to impress visitors. Zavotka says although it is usually easier for people to adapt to new environments if the new environment is similar to the previous home, many residents say the public spaces in the facilities are quite different from their previous homes.
