96-05-30 Robert Gold to be Acting Dean of MPS ROBERT GOLD TO BE ACTING DEAN OF MATH AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES COLUMBUS -- Robert Gold, professor of mathematics and associate dean, will be named acting dean of the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at The Ohio State University. Richard Sisson, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, announced Wednesday (5/29) that Gold has agreed to serve as acting dean beginning July 1 until a new dean can be recruited. Sisson will appoint a search committee in the near future to find a permanent dean for the college. Gold's appointment must be approved by the university's Board of Trustees. Gold will replace James Garland, dean of the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences since 1991. Garland has accepted a job as president of Miami University. "Dr. Gold brings to this position substantial experience in the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and in the university community, both as a teacher and a scholar," said Sisson, in announcing the appointment. Gold, 54, joined the Ohio State faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics in 1968. He was promoted to full professor in 1986 and named associate dean in 1991. Gold has also served as vice chair for instruction in the Department of Mathematics and has coordinated the instruction of several undergraduate mathematics courses. An expert in the field of number theory, Gold has authored or co-authored more than two dozen publications and has won several grants and awards. Gold also serves on many university committees. He earned a bachelor's degree with high honors at Swarthmore College in 1964, and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968.
